Coles kicks off annual SecondBite Christmas Appeal to help feed Aussies in need

Coles today launched its annual Christmas Appeal for SecondBite, Australia’s leading free food rescue organisation, to help feed Aussies in need.

From today until Christmas Eve, customers can get behind SecondBite with the simple purchase of a $2 donation card in store at any Coles supermarket, with each $2 card sold enabling SecondBite to provide the equivalent of up to ten meals to charity partners including soup vans, homeless shelters and women’s refuges.1

Customers can also support SecondBite by purchasing a limited-edition Remedy Pavlova or Merry Cherry Kombucha, with 20 cents from each 330ml bottle of the ‘Festive Batch’ sold in store or on Coles Online going to SecondBite.2 DASH Water will also donate 20 cents to the Coles SecondBite Christmas Appeal for every DASH Sparkling Water four-pack sold at Coles from Wednesday 27 November to Tuesday 24 December 2024 and Cadbury Australia will donate the equivalent of one million meals to the Appeal.

Additionally, customers can help spread the festive cheer for SecondBite at Coles Liquor stores with donations being accepted in all Liquorland, First Choice Liquor Market and Vintage Cellars stores, or by purchasing Local Brewing Co.’s Surplus Citrus Hazy Pale at Vintage Cellars or First Choice Liquor Market with 40 cents from every four-pack sold going to the cause.3

With DASH Water infused with wonky fruit and Local Brewing Co. using Coles Brand bread that would otherwise go to landfill, this year’s Christmas Appeal will not only be raising funds for people in need but will also be supporting sustainability initiatives to reduce food waste.

SecondBite was founded nearly 20 years ago with the mission to address food insecurity by rescuing quality, nutritious food to give to people in need for free. Today, their essential services reach more than 1,000 local community partners across Australia, playing a vital role in feeding those who need it most.

SecondBite CEO Daniel Moorfield said funds raised will help SecondBite to feed Aussies who are doing it tough during the holiday period and beyond.

“We all know that Christmas is a time of celebration, but unfortunately, it can also be a tough time for many Aussies who are struggling to put food on the table,” he said.

Coles has donated the equivalent of more than 270 million meals to SecondBite since 2011 and in the last financial year alone, Coles stores and distribution centres donated over 18,200 tonnes of unsold, edible food to SecondBite.

The Coles SecondBite Christmas Appeal will run from Wednesday 27 November to Tuesday 24 December 2024.

Coffee first arrived at Sultan Suleiman’s palace in İstanbul through Yemen during the Ottoman Empire. Master chefs in the palace kitchen developed a new technique to brew it. Turkish coffee takes its name from this cooking method invented by the Turks. After being a prominent beverage in the palace, Turkish coffee made its way into İstanbul’s streets. In the 16th century, public coffee houses started opening where people socialised by drinking coffee. As İstanbul was a cosmopolitan and commerce centre, coffee crossed borders again in the later period. While merchants began trading coffee beans to distant lands, European diplomats and other officials introduced the coffee culture to their countries.

About His Eminence Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche

From his birth in the foothills of the Himalayas, His Eminence Shyalpa Tenzin Rinpoche was recognized as a holy child. He began training as a spiritual leader at the age of four. After attending university in Varanasi, Rinpoche has been spreading peace across North America, Asia, and Europe. His Eminence has founded meditation and teaching centers in the United States, including Buddhafield, the Center for Enlightenment in Millerton, New York. His charitable organizations include the Bhrikuti Himalayan Foundation and the Himalayan Children’s Fund, which support humanitarian and philanthropic activities in the Himalayan region.

AM Best Upgrades Issuer Credit Ratings of Zurich Insurance Group Ltd and Its Main Rated Subsidiaries

AM Best has upgraded the Long-Term Issuer Credit Ratings (Long-Term ICR) to “aa” (Superior) from “aa-” (Superior) and affirmed the Financial Strength Ratings (FSR) of A+ (Superior) of the main rated insurance subsidiaries of Zurich Insurance Group Ltd (Zurich) (Switzerland). At the same time, AM Best has upgraded the Long-Term ICR to “a+” (Excellent) from “a” (Excellent) of Zurich, a non-operating holding company. The outlook of the Long-Term ICR has been revised to stable from positive, whilst the outlook of the FSR is stable.

The Credit Ratings (ratings) reflect Zurich’s consolidated balance sheet strength, which AM Best assesses as very strong, as well as the group’s strong operating performance, very favorable business profile and appropriate enterprise risk management.

The upgrades for the Long-Term ICRs reflect the continued resilience of the group’s balance sheet strength, underpinned by excellent financial flexibility, and strong operating returns from its diverse profit centres. Over the past several years, the group’s pricing actions, risk selection and natural catastrophe exposure management, have led to an improved and less volatile performance of its property/casualty portfolio. In addition, the group’s life operations and fee business provide it with solid additional earning streams, supporting robust internal capital generation.

Zurich’s balance sheet strength is underpinned by risk-adjusted capitalisation, as measured by Best’s Capital Adequacy Ratio (BCAR), which is at the strongest level. The assessment considers Zurich’s consolidated financial leverage, which is expected to remain stable over the coming years, together with the group’s strong capital management capability, excellent financial flexibility, and solid regulatory solvency position. Zurich reported a Swiss Solvency Test coverage ratio of 224% as at the end of September 2024 (year-end 2023: 233%). AM Best’s assessment of Zurich’s risk-adjusted capitalisation includes a contribution from economic capital embedded in long-term business and equity credit for hybrid debt, which are considered weaker elements of the group’s capital structure.

Zurich’s strong operating performance is supported by a highly diversified earnings profile by line of business and geography. This was illustrated by a robust net combined ratio of 94.5% for 2023, as calculated by the group. Earnings have been supported by good growth across protection and savings products, evidenced by growth in life present value of new business premiums of 24% in 2023. Results are enhanced by the consistent fee-based income derived from Zurich’s non-claims management services for Farmers Exchanges (a leading insurance group operating in the United States), of USD 1.9 billion in 2023.

Zurich is one of the world’s largest insurance groups, with excellent diversification by geography and product. The group maintains strong competitive positions in Europe and the United States, a strong presence in Latin America and selective positions in Asia Pacific.

The Long-Term ICRs have been upgraded to “aa” (Superior) from “aa-” (Superior), whilst the FSRs of A+ (Superior) has been affirmed, with the outlook of the Long-Term ICRs revised to stable from positive and the outlook of the FSRs maintained at stable for the following subsidiaries of Zurich:
