Pulumi Automates, Secures, and Manages the Kubernetes Ecosystem

Enterprise-grade platform enhances infrastructure efficiency, elevates security, and provides deeper operational insights across K8S environments.

Today at KubeCon Salt Lake City 2024, Pulumi announced significant enhancements to the Kubernetes ecosystem. Key improvements include major updates to the EKS provider supporting Amazon Linux 2023 and Security Groups for pods, the release of Pulumi Kubernetes Operator 2.0 with dedicated workspace pods, Pulumi ESC integration with External Secrets Operator, and a new Kubernetes-native deployment agent for enhanced security and scalability. These updates, alongside improvements to Helm Chart resourcesenhanced await logic, and better CustomResource support through crd2pulumi, strengthens Pulumi’s commitment to providing developers with robust, enterprise-grade tools for managing Kubernetes infrastructure.

“Pulumi’s deep integration with the CNCF ecosystem underscores our commitment to modern cloud infrastructure management,” says Eric Rudder, co-founder of Pulumi. “Our approach of embracing the great work done by open-source communities, using the most popular programming languages and enhancing these efforts with enterprise-grade security and scalability features, enables organizations to manage infrastructure at incredible scale. Working closely with the CNCF and supporting the entire cloud-native stack, we’re not just building tools – we’re advancing the entire community towards a more efficient, secure, and collaborative future.”

Managing Kubernetes workloads are increasingly complex because they rely on numerous different CNCF products and span multiple clouds. This complexity creates significant challenges for managing infrastructure, securing cloud workloads, and gaining visibility across all Kubernetes resources and infrastructure.

Managing infrastructure has become progressively more time consuming and complicated, especially with legacy tools that weren’t designed to handle hundreds or thousands of Kubernetes resources spread across multiple clusters. Teams often struggle with large, complex YAML configurations and domain-specific languages (DSLs) that are restrictive and fail to scale effectively.

Pulumi Infrastructure as Code (IaC) offers a modern solution to these challenges. Instead of specialized languages, teams can program both their cloud infrastructure and Kubernetes resources using familiar, general-purpose programming languages, enhanced by generative AI capabilities. For instance, setting up managed Kubernetes services like Amazon EKS can be accomplished with just a single line of code: cluster = eks.Cluster(“my-cluster”).

The latest Pulumi EKS v3 provider brings several important improvements. It now supports Amazon Linux 2023 and Bottlerocket Operating Systems, while adding enhanced security features including EKS Security Groups for Pods and Network Policies. The provider also streamlines various Kubernetes networking features by integrating them directly with EKS.

For teams looking to implement GitOps workflows, the Pulumi Kubernetes Operator has been updated to version 2. This new version introduces dedicated “workspace” pods for each stack, providing teams with greater isolation between workloads, improved scalability, and more granular access control over their infrastructure resources.

Poor secrets management creates critical security risks through static and sprawling secrets and configurations. Pulumi Environments, Secrets, and Configuration (ESC) solves this by centralizing secrets management and orchestration. Through native integration with Kubernetes’ External Secrets Operator (ESO), Pulumi ESC now securely injects secrets directly as environment variables into Kubernetes applications, making secure secrets management seamless and foolproof.

“ESC is very practical for centralizing configuration or secrets in environments that can inherit from each other,” says Alexandre Nedelec, a software engineer at Avanade. “It is very convenient to use it to get secrets from other stores like Azure Key Vault or 1Password, and the integration with OIDC allows easy retrieval of short term cloud access tokens, following security best practices.”

Organizations today face a massive challenge: making sense of millions of cloud resources spread across hundreds of Kubernetes clusters, clouds, regions, and accounts. Pulumi Insights tackles this complexity by providing unified search, compliance remediation, and visualization capabilities for all infrastructure resources – whether they were provisioned through Pulumi, Kubernetes YAML, Terraform, or cloud consoles. With the AI-powered Pulumi Copilot, teams can now discover cost savings, run compliance checks, and debug deployments across their entire infrastructure simply by asking questions in natural language.

FREESTYLE DIGITAL MEDIA RELEASES PARANORMAL HORROR DOCUMENTARY “IT’S COMING”

Chilling Documentary Debuts on North American VOD Platforms and DVD on November 12, 2024

Freestyle Digital Media, the digital movie distribution division of Byron Allen’s Allen Media Group, has just released the spine-tingling documentary, IT’S COMING, which is now available to rent/own on all North American digital HD internet, cable, and satellite platforms, as well as on DVD, starting November 12, 2024.

An official selection of the prestigious Hot Docs Film Festival, IT’S COMING follows the harrowing, firsthand, supernatural encounters of Ashley Roland-White, a successful Brooklyn-based day trader and mother of five. Despite her natural skepticism, Ashley acknowledges she has been haunted by a malevolent presence since childhood. As a professional and mother, she kept these experiences private, sharing them only with her immediate family, fearing others would question her mental stability or dismiss her as irrational. However, when the spirits begin targeting her children, Ashley is forced to confront the dark forces threatening her family.

Described as a real-life version of PARANORMAL ACTIVITY with the investigative depth of DEMON HOUSE, IT’S COMING offers a gripping mix of supernatural and real-life paranormal encounters. Director Shannon Alexander presents Ashley’s story with empathy, highlighting her son Javier’s unusual bond with the presence—adding an eerie layer to the narrative. During production, inexplicable events heighten the film’s authenticity: a boom mic lunging toward Ashley, mysterious shadows captured on night vision, and retired New York City Police Officer Chris DeFlorio—author of CALLED INTO DARKNESS—using a Kinect camera detects a crouching, otherworldly figure near the family’s television. This chilling documentary is a must-see for horror and paranormal enthusiasts alike.

Directed and produced by Shannon Alexander, IT’S COMING features Ashley Roland-White, Javier Vega, and Chris Deflorio as themselves.

“There’s been a growing interest in exorcisms and the paranormal in recent years,” explains filmmaker Shannon Alexander (SEX, LOVE, MISERY: NEW NEW YORK). “With IT’S COMING, I wanted to document real-life cases, particularly the ten percent that experts deem legitimate. Following Ashley’s family in New York provided a unique lens into these haunting experiences, allowing viewers to see this sinister presence through the eyes of a mother and her children.”

Freestyle Digital Media negotiated the deal to acquire IT’S COMING directly with Caroline Stern of Canoe Film and filmmaker Shannon Alexander.

Understanding the Dust Explosion Pentagon: A Guide to Preventing Catastrophic Incidents

Dust explosions are a significant industrial hazard that can cause devastating consequences. This article discusses the factors contributing to them, which are crucial to prevention.

Dust explosions are a significant industrial hazard that can cause devastating consequences. To prevent these incidents, it’s crucial to understand the factors that contribute to them.

The Dust Explosion Pentagon outlines the five key elements that must be present for an explosion to occur:

1. Fuel (Dust Cloud): Combustible dust particles suspended in the air.
2. Oxygen: Necessary for combustion.
3. Ignition Source: A spark, flame, or heat source.
4. Dispersion: The spreading of dust particles into a cloud.
5. Confinement: A confined space that traps the dust cloud.

By removing any one of these elements, the potential for a dust explosion can be significantly reduced. However, it’s important to note that this may not eliminate the fire risk.

To learn more about the Dust Explosion Pentagon and how to implement preventative measures, read about The Dust Explosion Pentagon and Confined Spaces.

With an engineering degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and law and natural resources economics degrees from The University of Arizona, she approaches issues with a science-based decision-making style.

Sen. Brian Fernandez, District 23

Fernandez is a proven champion of his district who is running for reelection to ensure everyone in his rural community can achieve the American Dream. Having a technology background as a software developer, he understands his industry is essential to Arizona’s healthy and thriving economy. He is supportive of more funding for STEM education and community colleges as they offer pathways to address the access to talent that Arizona’s innovative companies need to be successful. He fights to invest in safe, reliable infrastructure; sustainable water; and renewable energy for all Arizonans.

More Alaskans will get high-speed, reliable, affordable internet thanks to Alaska Communications’ network expansion.

Fast local service, delivered by locals

“We hear from customers across the state that they want reliable, unlimited internet from Alaska Communications. We’re taking steps to bring that service to more places,” said Drew Stevenson, senior management consultant at Alaska Communications. “This month, we’re enhancing service in Juneau and Soldotna with speeds up to 300Mbps, on average, twice the download speeds of direct-to-consumer satellite services while also being more reliable.”

“By partnering with a next-generation fixed wireless provider, we’re able to deliver fiber grade, low latency speeds up to 300Mbps, perfect for families with multiple users and for today’s essential tasks like video calls and online learning,” said Stevenson.

Starting at just $84.99/month, our service comes with professional installation by IBEW Local 1537 technicians and backed by our in-state technical support and customer service resources.

“Fiber is the gold standard, but we’re always focused on using the right technologies, like fiber fed fixed wireless, which can be better for certain areas,” said Stevenson. “We’re excited to give Alaskans more options for connecting their homes and businesses.”

Building the network of the future

With the future in mind, we’re focusing on building a fiber network that will withstand the test of time and serve Alaskans for decades to come.

“Fiber is often referred to as future proof because it has the capacity to handle speeds in the 100s of Gigabits,” said Stevenson. “Of course, residents don’t need those speeds today, but our fiber network is able to grow with Alaskans’ needs.”

Utilizing high-cost support to strengthen communities

Since 2017, we’ve deployed high-speed internet to close to 30,000 unserved or underserved locations through the CAF II program. These communities include Delta Junction, Fairbanks, Nenana, North Pole, Salcha, Nikiski, Anchor Point, Homer, Soldotna and Ninilchik.

Bridging the digital divide in Tribal communities

We’re a proud partner in the Alaska FiberOptic Project, a collaboration to transform connectivity across rural Alaska, delivering improved education, healthcare, economic opportunities and quality of life.

So far, funding has been secured to connect 15 villages with Gigabit speeds. Terrestrial construction began this summer along the Dalton/Elliot Highway and in the communities of Fort Yukon, Stevens Village and Beaver. Terrestrial construction precedes next summer’s work to lay fiber in the Yukon River.

“Access to affordable, reliable internet is a critical need in our lives today,” said Stevenson. “From accessing cloud-based medical records or visiting a medical specialist via Telehealth from the comfort of your home, to taking online classes or starting your own e-commerce business, connectivity has quickly transformed from a want to need. We’re honored to work with our Tribal partners to enable these opportunities.”

Getting connected

Alaskans can see the options available at their location by visiting order.alaskacommunications.com.

Join the broadband movement

If the projects described here sound exciting, you may be in luck. We’ve teamed up with fellow service provider Matanuska Telecom Association (MTA) to bring awareness to the world-class training programs offered through NECA/IBEW’s Alaska Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Trust.

“We aim to boost interest in the training program to grow the number of highly skilled professionals in the trade, which will directly improve lives in our communities through both high-paying jobs for Alaskans and the skilled workforce needed to connect our communities now and into the future,” said Stevenson.

Biorefinery Industry Research Report 2024: Industrial Biotechnology, Physico-Chemical, Thermochemical, Energy, Material, First Generation, Second Generation, Third Generation – Global Forecast to 2029

The “Biorefinery Market by Technology (Industrial Biotechnology, Physico-Chemical, Thermochemical), Product (Energy, Material), Type (First Generation (Corn, Vegetable Oils, Sugarcane), Second Generation, Third Generation) and Region – Global Forecast to 2029” report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.

The biorefinery market is expected to grow from an estimated USD 212.05 billion in 2024 to USD 314.62 billion by 2029, at a CAGR of 8.2%

Biorefineries are at the forefront of efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as renewable biomass is converted into biofuels and bio-based products. Biorefining is one of the directions adopted by governments and firms, which strive to reduce their carbon footprint and achieve net-zero emission targets.

Analysis

Rapid decreases in fossil fuel usage and the development of more sustainable alternatives for the production of energy, chemicals, and materials require biorefineries to form the backbone of much of this development.

Industrial Biotechnology, by technology, is expected to be the largest-growing segment from 2024 to 2029

The industrial biotechnology segment is expected to largest growing in the biorefinery market. Integration of industrial biotechnology is pivotal in biorefineries, facilitating the sustainable and efficient conversion of biomass into fuels, chemicals, and materials. It involves the use of enzymes, microorganisms, and biological processes to break down complex organic matter, such as agricultural residues, energy crops, and organic waste, into simpler compounds that can be transformed into valuable products.

Enzymatic hydrolysis, for example, is employed to convert lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars, which can then be fermented by engineered microbes to produce biofuels like ethanol, bioplastics, or other bio-based chemicals. Advances in synthetic biology and metabolic engineering allow for the optimization of these microbial pathways, increasing yield and reducing costs. Additionally, biocatalysis offers a greener alternative to traditional chemical processes, enabling more selective and environmentally friendly transformations.

Second Generation, by type, is expected to be the fastest-growing market from 2024 to 2029

It is anticipated that second-generation biorefineries will be pivotal to satisfy rising future energy demands, while enhancing sustainability and minimizing ecological impacts of fuel production. Various policy measures such as U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2); European Union Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) develop promotional niche markets for advanced biofuels by establishing a quota for second-generation biofuels. This incentivizes industry investment into conversion technologies for non-food biomass.

Europe is expected to be the fastest-growing region in the biorefinery market

Germany, France, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, UK and other similar countries are rapidly advancing biorefinery technologies and developing bio-based chemicals and biofuels. Europe has the fastest growing market in the biorefinery domain mainly due to strong government policies such as the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive (RED II), which contains requirements for renewable energy targets and biofuels. The region is very focused on reducing carbon emissions, as well as the principles of the circular economy, which has fostered investments in bio-based chemicals and fuels.

Part of this foundation for the development of biorefinery technologies and biorefinery industries in Europe is that it has a lot of agricultural residues and forestry biomass byproducts that can be utilized, as well as relatively advanced infrastructure compared to other regions of the world when considering sustainable practices. For instance, also, the French Government initiated a blending mandate for companies to combine gasoline or diesel with biofuels. That is a specific directive requiring the use of biofuels in a blend throughout France. The proportion of biofuels in these blends has increased significantly over the years and will be further increased based on targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions over time into the year 2030.

Reasons to purchase the report:

  • Analysis of key drivers (Increasing demand for biofuels and bio-based products, government initiatives and increasing need for sustainability, and technological advancements in the biorefineries are just a few of the primary drivers propelling the biorefinery market), restraints (Lack of product uncertainties, as well as costly initial capital expenditure, limit the market’s expansion), opportunities (development of advanced biofuels and circular economy initiatives), and challenges (variable and high cost of feedstock and competition from traditional fuels) influencing the growth.
