Shawn Windle examined the strategic impact ERPs play in the world of mergers and acquisitions. Shawn indicated that at the heart of acquisitions, “They [Private Equity] are really buying the organization for how the business operates, the brand name, the products they sell in the market, the sales channels that they have, and all of the intellectual property that that company has developed.” He further examines the idea stating, “An efficient ERP can be the foundation of such a business. Software is vital to business operations, therefore, potential investors may second guess acquiring an organization that has an outdated system. An outdated system is a major financial burden to investors.” Alternatively, Mergers come with significant obstacles that company leaders must mediate on best to facilitate companies coming together. Mr. Windle went on to specify that, “Sometimes, keeping the ERP system of the main or parent company is the least disruptive route for the new entity to take; however, at other times it is best to start from scratch with a new system to ensure a compromise is reached that benefits all parties involved.”
