The University of Saint Joseph’s Stance on Financial Aid: Supporting Dreams, Removing Barriers

Creative, impactful efforts aim to ensure a high-quality education is attainable for all

The University of Saint Joseph (USJ) announces its proactive stance on financial aid offerings, including new merit-based scholarships such as the Independent Scholars Award and Girls for Technology Scholars Award, to support the needs of the students and their families in light of recent national attention on the delayed FAFSA process.

Amidst the current uncertainty about receiving federal aid and acknowledging financial aid, for many, plays a significant role in higher education decisions, recognizing the merit and achievements of high school seniors is more important than ever.

USJ is at the forefront, offering innovative and impactful solutions like awarding merit-based scholarships upon admission and offering FAFSA workshops, financial literacy sessions, cost-of-attendance counseling, and extended enrollment deadlines while underscoring the message that a high-quality education is a tangible reality.

“Our efforts aim to ease concerns for students and their families,” said USJ Vice President for Enrollment Management Kimberly Crone. “We want students to know they can fulfill their dreams at USJ, and we will work with them to develop a financial plan with that goal in mind.”

Even with the current delay in receiving students’ need-based aid information, USJ encourages college-bound students and their families to keep moving forward.

USJ Director of Student Financial Services, Stacey Downing, adds, “Rest assured, once FAFSA information is available to us, we will add the maximum amount of need-based aid the student is eligible for to their aid packages.”

Second Annual Keiser University Day at the Capitol highlights University’s impact on Florida

Keiser University Seahawk pride was on full display on January 31 at the Florida Capitol as faculty, staff, alumni, and friends gathered to celebrate Keiser University’s tremendous impact on Florida during Keiser University Day at the Capitol.

Keiser University Day at the Capitol kicked off with a morning press conference to celebrate Seahawk student athletes and their outstanding results on the field and in the classroom. University administrators, members of the athletic department, and campus presidents from across the state were joined by Representative Randy Fine and other state legislators to honor the 2023 NAIA National Champion Seahawk Football team who took the crown in only their sixth season as a program. The University also used the opportunity to welcome new head coach Myles Russ who took the reins on January 29, 2024.

Throughout the day, members of the Keiser University community blanketed the first-floor rotunda in Seahawk blue and white and celebrated Keiser University’s role as one of Florida’s largest private, non-profit universities, serving approximately 20,000 students, 3,800 team members, and 100,000 alumni, and its commitment to helping address Florida’s growing need for workforce talent in many of the state’s critical industries.

“We are so pleased that we had the opportunity to meet with our state leaders and thank them for their ongoing support of Keiser University,” said Arthur Keiser, Ph.D., Chancellor of Keiser University. “We’re excited to keep working with legislators to ensure Keiser University can continue its positive impact in Florida and help meet the critical workforce demands of the state and the educational needs of our students.”

During the visit, teams of Keiser University representatives met with more than two dozen members of Florida’s cabinet and legislature to thank them for their support and advocate for Keiser University’s educational priorities. Highlighting the discussion was the Effective Access to Student Education (EASE) Grant, a state-funded access grant that provides tuition assistance to Florida full time, undergraduate students attending one of the 30 Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF).

The EASE Grant is a vital tuition assistance program to more than 41,000 Florida resident students who receive it. Students who attend ICUF universities, like Keiser University, have a positive impact on Florida’s future. An economic impact study conducted in 2021 found that EASE creates more than 21,000 jobs each year and generates $3.5 billion economic impact on Florida.

The day-long activities were highlighted by a pair of proclamations from both the Florida House and Florida Senate declaring January 31, 2024, as Keiser University Day in Florida. Keiser representatives also received a personalized tour of the senate chambers from Florida Senate President Kathleen Passidomo.

For nearly 50 years, Keiser University has been dedicated to the higher educational needs of its students and committed to addressing Florida’s growing need for workforce talent in critical industries like nursing and healthcare, information technology, defense and homeland security, transportation and logistics, and cybersecurity. Keiser University’s economic impact in Florida is more than $3 billion annually.

The University has received its fair share of accolades as it continues its mission to improve student outcomes, serve communities, and make a positive statewide impact. In 2023, Keiser University was named one of the top universities for Hispanics by The Hispanic Outlook on Education Magazine. Since 2019, the University has been ranked one of the top universities in providing upward social mobility to students by U.S. News & World Report.

About Keiser University:

Keiser University is a private, independent, non-profit university serving nearly 20,000 students at 21 Florida campuses, online, and two international sites. Co-founded in 1977 by Chancellor Arthur Keiser, Ph.D., and Evelyn Keiser, Keiser University currently offers more than 100 degrees from associate to the doctoral level. Keiser University is a designated Hispanic-Serving Institution, a member of the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities, and was ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in providing Social Mobility by U.S. News and World Report in 2023.

ProLiteracy Journal Shares ‘Power of Partnerships’ to Reach Low-Level Adult Learners

Because the Workforce Innovation and Opportunities Act (WIOA) prioritizes funding adult education programs that lead adults to career pathways, only 2% of our lowest-level adults in need of basic education are now receiving services. A Forum titled “The Power of Partnerships” in our new issue of Adult Literacy Education: The International Journal of Literacy, Language, and Numeracy, addresses this gap with leading experts sharing their experiences of how they reached low-level adults who have been left on the fringes as the field shifted to career-focused instruction and funding.

Contributors from Philadelphia, Houston, and Portland, Ore., discuss building atypical learning environments by partnering with other social service providers to meet and educate adults where they are to successfully create a community-based collective approach to literacy.

“These cities are not the only three cities where programs have faced the issue of how to reach low-level adults. However, by sharing their experiences and lessons learned, it creates a launching pad for others to think about how they could use a similar model in their own communities to create sustainable access to adult literacy services at the most basic levels,” said Mark Vineis, ProLiteracy president and CEO.

We are dedicated to giving adult literacy practitioners, researchers, funders, and policymakers evidence-based information about the field to guide their practice through the journal. We also want to prompt important discussions and build sustainability within the field.

We partner with Rutgers University to produce Adult Literacy Education. The journal editors—Alisa Belzer, Amy Rose, and Heather Brown—are leading researchers in the field of adult literacy and education who believe research is an important complement to practitioners’ experiences, intuition, and professional training.

A new issue of the free online journal is released three times per year to share the latest research and best practices in adult literacy, numeracy, and English language education. Each article in Adult Literacy Education goes through a blind peer-review process to ensure we are publishing the highest quality information that the field can trust and use.

You can find the new issue of Adult Literacy Education at https://www.proliteracy.org/ALE-Journal. Writers interested in submitting articles for consideration in future issues of the journal can find author guidelines and a submission form on the journal’s webpage.

By keeping our research free, we can ensure that the important information shared in the journal can benefit all adult learners equally.

KC Life Counseling Introduces New Counseling Course For Families

The course focuses on nurturing open communication among family members and facilitating more interactions to achieve mutual understanding and closer bonds.

KC Life Counseling, a center that provides counseling courses using a variety of therapy treatments to individuals, couples and families has introduced a new family counseling course that emphasizes bridging mutual and communication gaps among family members. The course is for any family who wants to develop a wholesome, open-minded and accepting relationship.

Addressing problems that commonly beset families such as stubbornness, lack of open communication, unwillingness to forgive and forget, lack of understanding and respect for individuality, the counseling course seeks to provide effective solutions by understanding the specific dynamics of families and the nature of relationships among members. Involving the active participation of each individual, the counseling helps members to put the value of their family ahead of themselves by stressing on the lifelong value of family relationships.

Specializing in teen mental health and development, the counseling course emphasizes on helping parents understand the problems teens go through, enabling and encouraging them to  create a home where their kids feel open, accepted and well understood to share their insecurities and struggles. Teenage years are when individuals are confused about their place in life, their relevance and value to friends, peers and other groups they associate with. Teens can be vulnerable, with their ego and esteem easily hurt. Without adequate support and understanding from parents, bad experiences during these formative years can have long lasting undesirable effects later in life. The counseling course helps parents understand the proclivity and inclination of their teenage children and how to provide them with support while giving them enough room to grow and find their own identity. The counseling also acts as a third party for teenager to let out things they feel uncomfortable to share with parents.

During the introduction, owner Laurie Ward said, “Everyone can reach a new level of personal growth and development through therapy and can witness life changing results from practicing Positive Psychology skills. No matter what challenges you’re facing, whether they are serious or mild, trivial or urgent, counseling and therapy can help you overcome them”

About KC Life Counseling:KC Life Counseling has been providing counseling courses that use a variety of therapy treatments to help individuals, couples and families overcome their inner and external challenges. It is one of the most sought-after family counseling in Kansas City, Missouri.

How High Schools Students Can Take Advantage of the Complex and Increasingly Subjective Nature of College Admissions

When it comes to college admissions within the United States, there are some who think that the complex and often subjective nature of the entire process is unfair to students.

After all, in many other parts of the world – such as Europe and countries in Asia – students are simply administered a series of exams which ultimately decide what school they will attend and what subjects they will study.

In the US, however, students are free to apply to as many schools as they wish and the standards of admissions are holistic and not quite as objective. In other words, everything from your academic performance to your extracurricular involvement to your personal statements and application matter.

The holistic admissions system has led to an entire ecosystem in which high school students are doing what they think will have the most positive and impactful result on their eventual admissions to these schools.

And the rules and game keep changing.

While schools used to place heavy value on a student’s standardized test scores, more and more schools are shifting away from the SAT and ACT entirely. In fact, the schools that seem to be leading the charge when it comes to this push are some of the most prestigious schools in the country, such as Ivy League and University of California schools.

So, where does this leave American students? Now that the only factor that was truly objective in the admissions process is losing importance, a new era has begun in which students get the chance to prove their worth in a much more subjective and holistic process.

Eric Eng, founder and CEO of the college admissions consulting company AdmissionSight, believes that this is opening the door for students to actually take advantage of this changing process through the right guidance and strategy.

“Now more than ever, students have the opportunity to tell their own story and make a compelling case as to why they deserve a spot at even the most competitive schools,” he said. “It’s no longer about being a good test-taker or getting the strongest grades and test scores. Now, it is about high school students proving that they are passionate, intelligent, focused and driven young adults who are simply looking for a high learning community in which they can spread their wings.”

Eng, who has years of experience helping students get into the most competitive school, clearly believes that there is a new opportunity for students. He should know, as his company boasts an incredible acceptance rate of 75 percent to the Ivy League and Top 10 schools, and 98% of his students are admitted to their top choice schools.

So, what are some of the ways that high school students can actually take advantage of this subjective and holistic approach?

There are several things outside of performing exceptionally well inside the classroom that will help students gain admission to prestigious schools like Harvard, Yale, Stanford and more.

Focus on extracurriculars

One of the best ways for students to prove that they are passionate about certain subjects and ready for the expectations, pressures and opportunities of college life is for a high school student to get deeply involved in extracurriculars. Of course, there are highly prestigious high school clubs, competitions and academic research that students can pursue, but local clubs, sports teams and community engagement are still quite valuable.

What is most important when it comes to these activities is that students stick with what they care about and pursue roles of leadership and impact in their organizations. Colleges want to see a student focused on their academic passions and how they apply their intellectual curiosity outside of the classroom to make an impact.

Apply to top summer programs

Applying and getting into top summer programs is a fantastic way for high school students to make the subjective nature of college admissions work in their favor.

In fact, many of the most competitive colleges and universities offer summer programs in a number of different subjects, from political science to environmental sustainability. This offers high school students the chance to get on a college campus and experience what it’s like to be surrounded by top professors and students. They also get the chance to form and cultivate relationships with schools that they are interested in one day applying to.

Writing an incredible personal essay

Another way for students to make the most out of the current admissions system in place is to focus heavily on crafting a compelling and rich essay that will let admissions officers learn about who you are as a student and as a unique individual.

Talk about your passions, your goals and more to give every college you apply to the sense that they simply must have you walking around their halls in the near future.

After all, what’s better than a really great story?
