Embry-Riddle Awarded $3,875,000 for Cybersecurity Scholarships for Students

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Embry-Riddle more than $3.8 million to be granted to cybersecurity students in the form of scholarships over the next five years.

“Embry-Riddle has this unique capability in the safety-critical domain of aviation and aerospace cybersecurity,” said Dr. Radu Babiceanu, professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and principal investigator on the NSF-sponsored project. “Our students have the opportunity to really make a significant difference in the cybersecurity of transportation, as well as of satellite data and radar systems.”

As home to the Center for Aerospace Resilience (CAR), “Embry-Riddle is well-positioned to advance national and state goals for minimizing cybersecurity risks to aviation and commercial space enterprise by building workforce capacity,” said University President P. Barry Butler, Ph.D. “We are honored to be entrusted with this NSF grant, which will allow us to prepare future cybersecurity leaders.”

TWENTY FULL-RIDE SCHOLARSHIPS

The grant to Embry-Riddle, supported by NSF’s CyberCorps Scholarship for Service program, is intended to address an urgent need for highly skilled cybersecurity professionals, especially in government agencies. Twenty scholarship recipients, 16 undergraduates and four graduate students, will receive full tuition and fees to attend Embry-Riddle, plus stipends, for up to two years, and will agree to work in cybersecurity for federal, state, local or tribal governments for the same duration as their scholarship support after graduation. The recipients will gain hands-on experience using state-of-the-art equipment in CAR facilities.

“As cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity, so must our approaches to cybersecurity education and our workforce,” said Sethuraman Panchanathan, director of the NSF, in an announcement from the agency. “The cybersecurity talent shortage remains a critical issue in the United States, with businesses and government agencies alike struggling to fill critical cybersecurity positions.”

The project proposed by Embry-Riddle, which was one of eight chosen by the NSF to receive funding, is designed to recruit a diverse group of scholarship recipients, offering them “a supportive environment for them to flourish through effective mentorship, well-developed curriculum, student involvement activities, and research experiences leading to their graduation and successful placement,” according to the project abstract. It will involve Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach, Florida, and Prescott, Arizona, campuses, Babiceanu said, selecting scholarship recipients “from the best of our diverse group of applicants from both campuses.”

Co-principal investigators include associate professor Dr. Keith Garfield and assistant professor Dr. Omar Ochoa, from the Daytona Beach Campus; as well as Dr. Krishna Sampigethaya, chair and associate professor of the Department of Cyber Intelligence and Security; and Dr. Jon Haass, professor in the Department of Cyber Intelligence and Security, both from Prescott.

The award to Embry-Riddle demonstrates its excellence in the aviation and aerospace cybersecurity realm, said Remzi Seker, Embry-Riddle’s associate provost for research.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University this week joined a national effort to build aviation and aerospace cybersecurity after being selected by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to receive $3,875,000 that will be awarded in scholarships to students in cybersecurity programs over the next five years.
“The Center for Aerospace Resilience was established to coordinate Embry-Riddle’s efforts related to aviation and aerospace cybersecurity,” said Seker. “This award is a testament to the quality of research performed by the faculty members affiliated with CAR, as well as Embry-Riddle’s commitment to meeting the national need for cybersecurity professionals who can improve the cyber resilience of aviation and aerospace systems.”

“We want to thank the State of Florida for providing Embry-Riddle with support as we pursued this grant, including the Governor and Congressman Michael Waltz and his team,” Butler added. “This project will be critical to Florida’s future, innovation and high-paying jobs.”

SAFETY MANAGER TRAINING FROM DISPATCH42 SCHOOL

Dispatch 42 School launches a new training course – Safety Manager

Just half a year ago, Dispatch42 launched the Freight Dispatcher Training platform – “Dispatch42 School”, a school where everyone can learn the profession of a truck dispatcher in a matter of a few months and start working right away. Both the idea and the truck dispatcher training have been well-received by online users that today 400 students from different parts of the world are studying at Dispatch42 School, and their number is constantly growing.

As far as is known, the demand for a product always leads to its modification and development. Today, the school is launching a new training course and invites everyone to learn another profitable profession from the world of logistics – Safety Manager

Who is a Safety Manager?

The US logistics market is a massive industry with an average turnover of more than $797 billion. Not only is this a constantly growing infrastructure, a network of highways and roads that expand every year, but also a mass of employees who work in this field.

The entire system, or rather the work of freight carriers in USA, is under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Transportation. Under it there is a department – the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Administration (FMCSA), the government agency that regulates the operation of vehicles and freight transportation in the country.

The goal of this department is to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities on US roads. How? By means of rules that are uniform for all freight carriers, which they all must obey. Essentially, it is an enormous set of laws, details and indicators. Both the business owner and the driver are obliged to comply with them.

The Safety Managers are the specialists reviewing these laws and regulations. They research and then implement them into the company policy. Collaborating with a carrier company, Safety Managers develop a working system within their own firm so that it meets the requirements of the state and earns a good rating score.

They, much like the law, are interested in having only professionals who comply with the traffic management system in the United States to sit behind the wheel of the trucks. In part, it can be called Safety Managers the “guardian angels” of the firm, because without them and their involvement the company will not be able to obtain permission for cargo transportation, recruit personnel… or properly operate, in general.

Why is a Safety Manager necessary for every company in US?

The matter is quite simple and complex at the same time. The reason being that the rules and procedures of cargo transportation in the United States are very different from those in Europe or in the post-Soviet countries. USA is a country of high demands, and the process of cargo transportation is built in such a way that everyone is obliged to obey them. Anyone who does not follow suit will fall out of the system, as they are considered a potentially dangerous cargo carrier capable of provoking road accidents.

Moreover, each company has its own public profile where all violations are recorded: the number of accidents, violations in the driver’s mode of operation, ineffective vehicle maintenance, and so on. As soon as the indicator of violations rises to the so-called “alert level” or reaches the “intervention threshold”, the firm comes under the supervision of an inspector of the FMCSA. The agency automatically receives a notification that a company with an unfavorable rating is “at risk”, which means regular check-ups from an inspector, fines and even the risk that a company will be closed altogether for non-compliance with the law. According to the FMCSA logic, such a company has bad management, which means its drivers are a danger to others.

Safety Managers are professionals who give a business owner all the necessary recommendations in order to avoid these dire consequences. They also negotiate with representatives of the Federal Department, fill out all the necessary paperwork, and in short, they are the embodiment of the link between the law and the trucker.

Why is the work of a Safety Manager valued so much?

This kind of specialist offers valuable advice to any business owner on how to follow the law and successfully build a positively high rating for the company. And as is known, company with good reputation make more money in United States.

What is the core of the Safety Manager course from Dispatch42 School?

The course consists of 16 different modules that provide students with the opportunity to explore the entire profession from start to finish. The first two modules fully explain what the US trucking business is and what role Safety Managers play in it. Furthermore, according to the idea of the course author Diana Bulgaru, there is a gradual immersion in the work of Safety, all the details and pitfalls, theory and practice.

Diana Bulgaru worked at Dispatch42 for more than 5 years, founded her own Safety department and worked with various freight carriers, both in the United States and Europe, as well as in the CIS countries. Today, the number of her subordinates in the Dispatch42 department reaches 50 people, the department itself works with 250 companies from different countries, and 1300 drivers turn to Dispatch42 for different services every day.

Thus, the Dispatch42 company has collected the valuable experience of Safety Manager which it has accumulated over 5 years, packaged it into a course, and invites everyone to study it today.

How is the course structured?

In the Safety Manager course from Dispatch42, possible to find everything about this profession, starting with filling out the documentation, listings of sites useful to students later at work, opening up a firm, and ending with drivers’ work schedule, monitoring their professional performance, and interacting with the FMCSA the right way. Discussed separately are the topics of vehicle maintenance, tax policy and even accounting elements, since in many companies Safety Managers combine multiple functions, including the function of an accountant.

Since Safety Manager is a rather practical profession than a theoretical one, a lot of time in the course is devoted not only to practical assignments, but also to real case situations, stories and problems that students may face at work.

What benefits do students of Dispatch42 School get?

By acquiring the Safety Manager course, they receive a full-fledged profession, both theory and practice, which will then make it possible to earn good income after completing their studies. Essentially, they invest finances in knowledge that will pay off for them in the first months of active work in the field of Safety, and then bring profits.

Moreover, during the course of training, the students are assigned a mentor and a curator. These teachers help them learn every step of the way, hold online conferences once a week and discuss news and various topics related to Safety Management.

After completing the course, student at Dispatch42 School receives an engaging and highly demanded profession, a position that is applicable and well needed by any shipping company in the USA and Canada, as well as a number of benefits that the profession itself offers:

– ability to work remotely on the US and Canadian markets;

– ability to be self-employed, with clients who need Safety services;

– ability to make a good income. On average, a beginner Safety Manager can earn about $2000 a month in the CIS and up to 7 thousand dollars in USA;

– ability to self-regulate schedule and work from home.

Also, as an added bonus, Dispatch42 School offers employment with the company to the most prospective students who have shown their capabilities and established themselves as good specialists.

And most importantly: since the US freight market annually contributes 5 to 8 percent to America’s GDP, it can be safely assumed that the Safety Manager profession, as well as the work of freight carriers in the country, will always be in demand, even under the conditions of Covid or other unfavorable factors.

High School Seniors: Final Call to Enter National Conscience Month’s $2,000 Scholarship Contest

With a January 28, 2022 application deadline fast approaching, one high school senior can still qualify to win a $2,000 higher education scholarship by entering the 3rd annual National Conscience Month Essay Contest. Sponsored by the American Meditation Institute, the competition will reward the student who best explains how they experimented with using (or ignoring) the wisdom of their brilliant conscience to decide what to do – or what not to do – in a challenging situation.

According to Leonard Perlmutter, originator of National Conscience Month and author of the new book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, “At present there is no educational curriculum in our country teaching students exactly how the mind makes decisions, and how to use the Conscience as a practical resource in this process. The National Conscience Month essay contest draws attention to the need for young people to develop the critical decision-making skills they will increasingly need as they prepare to enter the adult world.”

Perlmutter’s book, YOUR CONSCIENCE, provides a clear and accessible explanation of how the mind works and offers practical tools for readers to experiment with this knowledge. The Conscience is one of four functions of the mind, and the key is learning how to coordinate these four as a group in order to make choices that lead to lasting happiness and fulfillment, rather than instant gratification. The book can easily be adapted into educational curricula at the middle and high school levels and beyond.

High school seniors can enter the scholarship contest now, and submissions will be accepted through January 28, 2022. The contest winner will be announced the first week in February, 2022.

The mission of National Conscience Month is to foster a national conversation that inspires individuals of all ages and political affiliations to experiment with using their Conscience in choosing their thoughts, words and deeds. This month-long observance is the perfect time to clarify our individual and collective vision by using the Conscience as an inspired and trustworthy guide to making better decisions that can resolve the seemingly unresolvable.

Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through Student Scholarships

North Carolina Nonprofit’s 37th Annual MLK Memorial Banquet Raises Money For Local Student Scholarships In Honor Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Sunday, January 16, 2022, the MLK University/Community Planning Corporation hosts the 37th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration to award high school seniors scholarships to attend college. This year’s event is a virtual live stream, reflecting Dr. King’s determination to carry on the work of education and empowerment in spite of all obstacles including the pandemic.

Beginning at 6 pm EST, the evening will highlight the work of the organization, feature prominent community speakers, musical selections and showcase a variety of award winners. In addition, the evening’s keynote speaker will be Dr. Elmira Mangum, CEO of EM Plus 3, LLC. A North Carolina native, Dr. Mangum is a former president of Florida A&M University, the first woman ever to serve in that office. The Master of Ceremonies will be Bishop L. Gene Hatley, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the MLK University/Community Planning Corporation.

The annual MLK Memorial Banquet is a crucial source of funding for the organization’s MLK/Edith Wiggins Scholarship Fund. Each scholarship extends $1,000-$1,500 to each recipient, with the goal of funding 15 to 20 renewable scholarships each year, awarded to Orange County high school seniors on the basis of financial need.

These ambitious and life-changing goals are achievable only through strong community support. Sponsorships for this year’s event are still available, from corporate sponsorships at varying levels through suggested individual donations, with options available for support suitable to any
budget.

“Since 1995, we have given over $320,000 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors to open up the world of possibilities that higher education affords. The ongoing value of this work, which continues to expand over the lifetime of each young person who is chosen to participate, is a worthy reflection of the goals of Dr. King.”, expressed Bishop Hatley.

Ticket sales for the virtual event will go directly to help fund additional MLK/Edith Wiggins Scholarships. Since 1995, the MLK University/Community Planning Corporation, a nonprofit corporation with Federal Tax Exempt status under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal revenue Code of 1986 and corresponding provisions, has embarked on a fundraising campaign to endow the MLK Scholarship Fund at $250,000. To date, the organization has raised approximately one-half of that goal.

To learn more, explore sponsorship opportunities, and purchase tickets for this event, please visit the 2022 MLK Memorial Banquet website.

Communications Skills are More Important than Ever in 2022

Many New Year’s Resolutions are to become better speakers and communicators. Brenden Kumarasamy guides the audience at Snackable Solutions on how to begin.

People have been socially distanced, and often socially isolated over the past two years. A common concern is that interpersonal skills are worsening among individuals, and in particular at the workplace. In a remote work environment, good communications are essential to holding an organization together. This includes a combination of emotional intelligence, and the ability to communicate effectively. According to expert communicator Brenden Kumarasamy, people must exercise their communications skills every day to maintain effectiveness. Snackable Solutions collaborated with Kumarasamy to present 3 daily public speaking exercises for success.

According to Kumarasamy, this daily exercise includes three parts: The random word exercise, mirroring, and structuring presentations like jigsaw puzzles. His methodology is designed to help people to speak effectively, to think on their feet when speaking, and to build rapport with their audiences.

Communications is About Connecting with Other People

According to Oxford Languages, communication is “the imparting or exchanging of information or news.” Therefore, good communicators are effective at understanding and distributing information to others. This means that a speaker must not just state the facts, but they must do so in a way that will inspire others to listen and retain information. This is where a combination of emotional intelligence and hard skills are necessary. Through words, people are able to convey information, ideas, and feelings. This transfer of information allows people to understand one another, and to develop stronger relationships.

According to Gallop, the cost of replacing an employee can range from “one-half to two times the employee’s annual salary — and that’s a conservative estimate.” These costs, which include attracting, retaining, and training a new employee can add up quickly. Many of these employees are lost due to poor communications between management and staff. Using Kumarasamy’s techniques, organizational leaders can expect to retain more employees amid “The Great Resignation.”

Preply Now Offers Over 900 Conversational French Teachers Online

The growing interest in the subject of foreign languages has meant that Brookline, MA-based company Preply has increased its selection of conversational French teachers. With students from all walks of life looking to improve their French skills, the presence of hundreds of tutors on this platform makes it all the more easier to find the right one.

Why Do More People Want to Practise Conversational French?

Conversational French is a popular subject because there are so many diverse purposes for this dialect: it comes in handy for those who want to speak the language informally on their travels and also for others who work internationally and must command a fluency in conversational French. However, it’s also a resume-boosting skill that can enhance career prospects.

French is the fifth most-spoken language on Earth, behind only English, Hindi, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish in terms of the number of people who use it. Nonetheless, this is largely due to the fact that French is one of the most popular second languages studied across the globe, as only around 76 million native speakers are included in the overall total of the 300 million people who speak it.

The need to speak fluently in different situations is the key aspect for many of these non-native speakers, as French is widely used in areas such as hospitality and tourism, fashion, and diplomacy. English is generally considered to be the only truly global language in the 21st century, but French is another strong contender, as it is the only other tongue spoken on anofficial basis on all five continents.

Preply Increases the Number of Tutors

The online learning platform offered by Preply uses a one-to-one teaching basis, where the student chooses their tutor and the times of their classes. The increasing demand for French lessons led to Preply boosting the number ofFrench teachers available on this platform to more than 900, simply to accommodate the sheer level of interest from prospective students.

A Preply spokesperson confirmed that their expanded range of tutors includes “native speakers from a wide selection of different countries and professional backgrounds”. With a variety of rates and availability listed on the site, it is easy for newcomers to find the right option for their learning style/needs and get started with no delays and at a time of their convenience.

About Preply

Having been founded in 2003, Preply has opened offices in Ukraine and Spain, while growing their number of employees to a total of more than 300. Together with language classes in English, Spanish, Italian, and more, the platform also puts students in contact with tutors in other subjects like accounting, economics, and history.

Dutch Country Living Makes Gift to Bloomfield Public Library, Encourages Others to Use Facility

Dutch Country Living recently donated $2,000 to the Bloomfield Public Library as a thanks for use of the state-of-the-art facility and meeting spaces.

Libraries have a long history of serving local entrepreneurs and businesses. Still, some, like the Bloomfield Public Library, are taking their business services to a new level with the renovated conference rooms available for use. Dutch Country Living (DCL) understands the importance of offering attractive, functional, and community-based places and were grateful for the opportunity to utilize the resources offered by the library.

In 2020 and 2021, while Dutch Country Living’s new office space was undergoing significant revitalization and remodeling at the historic Fenton Building, staff regularly scheduled meetings in the Library’s available conference rooms and other meeting spaces. This was essential in providing beautiful working conditions until the company was able to move into their new office space, located at 202 N Madison (the building, which features mid-century architectural details within the Bloomfield Main Street district, has a long history for citizens of the Bloomfield and Davis County who remember it as the Fenton Medical Building).

As a thank you for the use of the state-of-the-art facility and meeting spaces, Dutch Country Living Founder Levi Good, Community Development Director Diana L. Upton-Hill, and Projects Grants & Program Administrator Mary Wells recently stopped by with a $2,000 donation, presented to Library Director Anne Tews. Be sure to stop by and check out all the great resources located at the Bloomfield Public Library, 107 N. Columbia Street.

Why Literacy Is the Key to Human Rights and a Better Life for All

The Pasadena chapter of Youth for Human Rights International commemorates U.N. Human Rights Day, highlighting the right to education.

Illiteracy is our world’s slow-motion catastrophe. The United Nations estimates some 617 million children and adolescents of primary and lower secondary school age—more than 55 per cent of the global total—lack minimum proficiency in reading and mathematics. This learning calamity not only imprisons individuals, preventing their ability to climb out of poverty, it threatens the commercial and cultural future of entire nations as they vie to survive in a worldwide marketplace.

At a forum honoring United Nations Human Rights Day, the Church of Scientology Pasadena and its chapter of Youth for Human Rights International sponsored a presentation on this crisis December 4 by local attorney Tim Bowles.

No area of the planet feels the brunt of the developing tragedy in education more than sub-Saharan Africa, where the U.N. reports some 88 per cent of children (202 million) not proficient in reading and 84 per cent (193 million) not proficient in math.

To combat this stark reality and build on 15 years of successful human rights programs in West Africa, Bowles along with Liberian human rights activist Joseph Yarsiah and their on-the-ground volunteer team initiated the African Literacy Campaign to improve learning effectiveness with teacher training collaborations throughout the region.

Bowles explained the immediate motivation: “Ebola (2014-2016) and the destruction it inflicted upon the instruction of the youth population was a wakeup call.” Low literacy levels prevented the rapid dissemination of information and preventive measures. “lliteracy fueled that horrifying epidemic. Clearly then, ineffective education is the most destructive human rights violation. It makes possible violations of the remainder of the 30 articles of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.”

Bowles and Yarsiah resolved in 2016 to partner with Applied Scholastics International. “Through its successes in several African countries and worldwide,” says Bowles, “the organization is clearly qualified to offer a viable solution to illiteracy through the proven effective learning methods of American author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard, widely known as Study Technology or Study Tech. The methodology, one that I used to greatly advance my law school studies in the 1970s, is undeniably effective in improvement of student comprehension and application. Time and again, I have seen Study Tech enable young people to discover or recover the true joy of learning, so vital to competence and lasting benefit to themselves and their communities.”

The African Literacy Campaign has worked over the past five years with local youth leaders and accomplished American and South African educators to introduce Study Tech to Liberia’s ministries, policymakers, teachers and students.

The results have been gratifying, most recently in a three-week series of training workshops in Monrovia, Liberia’s capital, in July. “With the prospect of expanding vaccination protection, it was time to refire the campaign to its pre-pandemic levels and beyond,” says Bowles. “Those blessed with the tools and opportunity to improve societal conditions, particularly in the educational sector, have the responsibility to do so. Our mission is to empower the greatest resource we have—this world’s youth—with the means to achieve in their lifetimes what we have all dreamed: Nations and cultures educated, economically dynamic, culturally vibrant, and the result of lasting peace.”

Bowles called on those attending to support the program and spread the word, closing the presentation with the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr: “In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.”

Youth for Human Rights International (YHRI) is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to worldwide human rights education using the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It inspires and equips young people as advocates for tolerance and peace. YHRI works with educators, civil servants, religious leaders, youth, and any person or organization of good will. The organization distributes audiovisual and printed human rights educational materials that may be ordered from its website. www.youthforhumanrights.org

The Church of Scientology Pasadena was dedicated in 2010 by Scientology ecclesiastical leader Mr. David Miscavige. The Church and its activities are featured in an episode of Destination Scientology on the Scientology Network.
