Wasseem Dirani Provides a Crash Course on Canadian Taxes

The Canadian tax system is complex. Both the federal government and provincial governments carry tax obligations for residents. In this article, Wasseem Dirani, a taxation expert from Hamilton, Ontario, breaks down the essentials of the Canadian tax system for individual taxpayers.

Why We Pay Taxes

The government needs tax revenue to operate. Up to 49 percent of the Canadian federal government’s revenue comes from the individual income tax. Taxes pay for useful infrastructure and services like schools, roads, and law enforcement.

Understanding how the tax system works in Canada can empower individuals to know how to reduce their own tax liability. Wasseem Dirani explains the structure of the tax system in Canada and lays out a summary of the relevant laws.

Progressive Tax System

Canada has a progressive tax system. This means that each ascending tax bracket has a higher tax rate on individual income. For every dollar you earn, you will keep less as you rise through tax brackets.

For example, a taxpayer with an income between $45,282 and $90,563 would pay 15 percent on the first $45,282 and 20.5 percent on the income between $45,282 and $90,563. This comes out to roughly a 17.8 percent average tax rate.

Tax Withholding

Most employees have their tax withheld from their paycheques. However, not all employees have their taxes withheld and must calculate their taxes themselves. This includes freelancers and other self-employed people.

When taxpayers do their returns each April, they are primarily calculating whether they have paid enough tax during the year. If not, they will owe an extra tax bill. If they have paid too much, they will get a refund.

Getting a tax refund is not necessarily a good thing. It means that you have given the government an interest-free loan. It is better to adjust your withholding to the exact amount you need to pay.

Tax Deductions

Canada offers many categories of tax deductions for individual taxpayers. Wasseem Dirani summarizes these deductions.

Family and Caregivers

Taxpayers may claim deductions for child care expenses, child support payments, caregiver expenses, and adult dependents. These credits could allow parents and caregivers to claim significant amounts of their income. This represents Canada’s commitment to supporting families.

Education

Canadian taxpayers may file for a deduction on their moving expenses incurred to reach a post-secondary institution. Adult basic education is also covered, along with interest paid on student loans. Tuition and textbooks are deductible, along with many other provisions.

Disability

If you or your dependent have a physical or mental impairment, you may be able to claim disability tax credits. Caregivers can claim it on their taxes, and those with impairments can file it on their own as well.

Pension and Savings Plans

Certain pension and savings plans, such as those provided by the government, are not taxable under Canadian law. RRSPs and PRPPs are both eligible to receive tax deductions and credits.

Employment Expenses

Many employment expenses are deductible. Union dues, moving expenses, employment insurance premiums, and other categories are covered.

Provincial and Territorial Tax Credits

Provincial and territorial income tax is charged along with federal tax. Fortunately, there are tax credits available in most provinces and territories which can defray this amount.

Little-Known Tax Credits

In addition to these most frequently claimed credits, there are hidden credits that most taxpayers are not aware of. Using these credits can help to lower your tax bill and increase your personal financial health.

Medical expenses are deductible when they are not covered by healthcare insurance. These can include therapy animals and ambulance services.

Student loan interest is deductible. This can present a significant credit for university students and those who have graduated.

Understanding the Canadian Tax System

Canadian taxpayers should make sure that they are well-versed in the intricacies of tax law. When it comes time to pay taxes, you will want to reduce the amount you owe while complying with all relevant tax laws. If you fail to comply with tax laws, you may incur serious penalties, including fines and possible criminal prosecution.

It is important to consider how tax liability affects your financial health as a whole. If you have the wrong amount withheld or underpay your taxes, you could be putting yourself in financial danger.

Consulting With an Expert

Wasseem Dirani suggests getting professional help at tax time. A professional tax preparer can help you get all of the deductions you are due to receive and make sure that you are ready to comply with tax law.

Tax law in Canada can be complex, but the progressive system ensures that it is fair for all. Be sure to consider your provincial and territorial tax obligations when calculating the tax amount you owe.

E-Learning Company Is Disrupting the Status Quo on How People Fix, Improve, and Maintain Excellent Credit

Kenney Conwell is thrilled to announce the launch of MyMoneyEDU, an online financial education platform. The all-digital services are designed to revolutionize how people repair, improve and maintain their credit scores. MyMoneyEDU will help members cut their taxes, increase their cash flow, and increase their net worth by implementing their proven wealth strategies.

MyMoneyEDU was created to solve a gap in the minority community, namely a lack of financial education and access to financial resources. The team has simplified its processes so that anyone who is a good fit for their programs can participate without being limited by time or geography. Additionally, all MyMoneyEDU’s products and services are conveniently available in digital format.

Members who join MyMoneyEDU’s platform want time and financial independence, believing that the conventional American dream of going to school, getting a job, buying a house, and investing in a 401(k) is no longer the sole road to earning wealth. The MyMoneyEDU team has identified four major areas in which they can assist users in becoming first-generation millionaires.

The online program teaches how to 1) Use a cash flow management strategy to increase your personal income through a side hustle or a home-based business. 2) Leverage the power of both personal and business credit. 3) Make use of the stock market as a source of leverage. The simplest approach to build money is to INVEST in the stock market, either actively or passively. 4) Use tax planning to your advantage. It’s important to distinguish between tax planning and tax preparation. Planning comes before preparation, and when done right, it can help you avoid paying too much in taxes (aka tax avoidance).

In addition to the four key areas of leverage, the online classes explain how good cash flow management can help individuals develop financial discipline. Increased cash flow is easier to achieve with good credit. More investment options are created by increased cash flow. The more money you make, the more crucial it is to have a sound tax strategy. MyMoneyEDU guides clients through all the elements necessary to achieve their financial dreams through their comprehensive financial system.

MyMoneyEDU is proud to provide a comprehensive online education platform that helps people improve their financial situation, increase cash flow, and build their net worth over time. Their entire system offers financial clarity, accountability, as well as the freedom and flexibility needed to achieve the desired results.

About MyMoneyEDU and Kenny Cromwell – Kenney Conwell, founder of MyMoneyEDU, graduated from North Carolina A&T State University in May 2009, with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a certificate of entrepreneurship. As an entrepreneur, his mission is to educate, communicate, and equip others who are just starting out on their journey with the tools they need to succeed. He founded MyMoneyEDU with the goal of assisting 1,000,000 people in achieving a 700-credit score by 2029 or sooner so they can begin the E.R.I. process (Entrepreneurship, Real Estate & Investing).

Conwell and his team are dedicated to providing the community with the tools, resources, and knowledge necessary to attain outstanding credit and financial success.

Stonewall National Museum and Archives Launches Interactive Online LGBTQ History Timelines

Coincides with LGBTQ History Month / In Plain Sight can be accessed virtually or in-person at the museum’s touchscreen displays

Stonewall National Museum and Archives, the largest LGBTQ cultural organization in Florida and one of the largest LGBTQ archives and libraries in the United States, today launched In Plain Sight, an engaging digital experience that brings to live pivotal LGBTQ milestones and achievements.

In Plain Sight [stonewallnma.org] provides factual historic records and up-to-date information about people who have come out in different professional areas. It features more than 800 entries with brief descriptions and zoom-in capabilities for high-res photos organized in 10 categories: AIDS/HIV, Arts, Business, Film/TV, Literature, Memorials, Milestones, Music, Sports, and Theatre/Dance. Far more than an interactive display, the team designed an engaging curriculum that provides in-depth education and opportunities to interact with existing material from the archival collection available at the museum.

For centuries there was a tremendous stigma associated with being gay. From both a religious and civil perspective people have been ostracized because of who they love. This prejudice has caused a tremendous amount of hardship for many people.

Over the past few decades, students and proponents of gay studies and gay rights have looked at LGBTQ history to understand where the bias comes from and how people have worked to overcome that stigma. This work is done to improve the people today and future generations.

Understanding LGBTQ history of bias is important to anyone who cares about racism, sexism, ageism, or any form of discrimination. It is important to anyone who cares about breaking down barriers and creating an inclusive society.

Hunter O’Hanian, Executive Director of Stonewall commented, “For years, a static LGBTQ timeline showcased in a wall became one of the museum’s most popular areas. We wanted to expand its reach to online audiences at a time when visits to cultural institutions are restricted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while making it timelier and more inclusive regarding gender and race.”

In Plain Sight was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Florida Humanities Council. The project was developed in partnership with our research team and multidisciplinary digital firm DreamCatcherMKT.

The Timeliness can be accessed in-person at the museum or online at stonewallnma.org in desktop or mobile devices. The in-person experience consists of two large touchscreen displays and an engaging curriculum that allows students and visitors to explore and examine copies of items, such as buttons, t-shirts, papers, periodicals, and other artifacts contained in the archives. The goal is to provide an interactive discussion that enhances the learning experience of our history.

Visitors are encouraged to schedule an appointment or one-on-one tour by calling (954) 763-8565 Monday – Friday from 11am to 5pm or Saturdays from 11am to 3pm. The museum is following strict COVID-19 health guidelines.

University of Phoenix and Emsi Collaborate to Map Skills Taught in the Classroom to Those Desired by Today’s Workplace and Built into Degree Curriculum

University of Phoenix is participating in the SHRM Conference, West Hall, Booth #12063, and highlighting a strategic collaboration with Emsi, a leader in labor market analysis, that changes the way we think about higher education and its connections to careers. Focused on instilling “skills-based learning” in graduates, the University of Phoenix is actively using workplace data and insights to link program coursework to the types of skills employers indicate they are seeking.

“Our work with Emsi will help our graduates to become more career-ready and demonstrate their newfound skills. We want our students to feel empowered with the knowledge that they have the skills necessary to pursue opportunities in their chosen fields.” Tweet this

“Helping students understand how their learning connects to desired employee skills is the new frontier in higher education,” said Bob Hieronymus, vice president of partnerships at Emsi. “University of Phoenix was among the very first universities to adopt the use of Emsi data early in the program development process back in 2015. Today, they are at the forefront of developing programs which focus program curriculum outcomes and student assessment specifically on desired job skills. This kind of ‘skillification’ of curriculum will transform the higher education landscape.”

By pulling data from government labor sources and real-time job postings, Emsi builds algorithms to analyze the labor market and identify skills currently in demand. The University of Phoenix utilizes this research and data to map in-demand skills to curriculum and programs. This intentional approach keeps University of Phoenix programs and courses focused on bridging the gap between what you learn in the classroom and what to speak to in career conversations.

“Adult students want to know if what they are learning is useful and how it applies to their career goals,” said Ruth Veloria, chief strategy and customer officer for University of Phoenix. “Our work with Emsi will help our graduates to become more career-ready and demonstrate their newfound skills. We want our students to feel empowered with the knowledge that they have the skills necessary to pursue opportunities in their chosen fields.”

The work with Emsi complements the already established University of Phoenix infrastructure that supports skills being embedded into curriculum outcomes. By incorporating labor market data to determine the skills employers are seeking, along with the expertise and counsel from practitioner faculty, University of Phoenix aims to translate education outcomes into career-ready skills.

“The future of higher-education will be built on the innovative application of data,” continued Veloria. “Providing skills-outcome data for courses and programs is like reviewing a nutritional label before eating a meal. Students now have a direct line of sight into the skills they will build, providing transparency into their academic experience.”

One example of how the skills are linked to curriculum can be found in the University’s Leading Change course in the MBA program. Research and data show a need for business professionals to understand how to build healthy and effective organizational cultures. Assessing organizational cultures is a skill mapped back to the course. Assignments include assessing an organization’s culture and performance and creating a change management plan using that insight to implement changes. Students can utilize that plan to demonstrate to their employer, or potential employer, they can lead change by understanding organizational culture.

Two of the University of Phoenix’s most popular programs, Master of Business Administration and the competency-based Master of Business Administration, are currently fully mapped to skills, with other programs and associated coursework being skills mapped this year.

In addition to skills-mapping coursework in various degree programs, University of Phoenix is also committed to helping active students and graduates throughout their entire career with career services, such as coaching and networking through their new Career Services for Life™ commitment. SIUE Achieves Historic Graduate Enrollment, Largest Fall First-Year Class in Six Years

Landmark graduate enrollment, the largest first-year class in six years, increasing diversity and growing international attendance highlight Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s strong fall 2021 enrollment picture.

Landmark graduate enrollment, the largest first-year class in six years, increasing diversity and growing international attendance highlight Southern Illinois University Edwardsville’s strong fall 2021 enrollment picture.

SIUE’s overall enrollment grew 1.2% (150 students) to 13,010 for fall 2021. The University welcomed 1,992 first-year students in fall 2021. Master’s and doctoral degree program enrollment reached 3,043 students, the largest total in 44 years. Plus, international enrollment soared, growing 48% to 536 students, matching the largest number in University history.

Additional historic enrollment numbers were achieved by the School of Nursing, which grew to 1,906. Positive milestones also include the School of Business reaching 1,692 students (largest since 2001), and the School of Education, Health and Human Behavior growing to 1,851 students (largest since 2004).

“SIUE’s advancement is extraordinary, especially amid pandemic-related challenges,” said Chancellor Randy Pembrook. “Our fall 2021 enrollment numbers demonstrate dedicated and innovative approaches across all facets of the University from enrollment management and academic affairs to our Divisions of Student Affairs and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and beyond. I am proud to work alongside these individuals to welcome and foster growth in our new and returning students. We are indeed shaping a changing world.”

“The mix of growth from domestic and international students at both undergraduate and graduate levels is a testament to the innovation and agility of our academic deans, faculty and staff throughout the University,” said Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Denise Cobb. “We amplified on-ground capacity in high-demand programs and remained committed to our tradition of high impact learning experiences. We have steadily increased our online offerings based on applicant interest. Our academic leaders have demonstrated the ability to serve traditional student experiences, offer innovative graduate programs, and meet the needs of adults who are ready to complete their degree. The changes we’ve made have strengthened the University and helped meet our goals of access and opportunity.”

The University is making positives strides in operationalizing inclusive excellence at all levels of the institution. SIUE’s 2021-22 student body is the most diverse in its history.

According to fall 2021 data, Asian American students represent 2.6% of the group, Black students 13.2%, Hispanic students 5.3%, international students 4.1%, with 3.2% reporting Multiple Races, White students 67.9% and 3.4% not disclosing their ethnicity.

Numerous bright spots emerged in the initial enrollment picture, including a first-year class which grew 28% (438 students). In the first year of a test optional environment, the entering class reflected an average high school GPA of 3.5, which has been the class average for each of the past four years.

“We are pleased with the quality of this first-year class, as we shifted away from using ACT/SAT scores in the admissions process this year,” explained Director of Undergraduate Admissions Todd Burrell. “We worked with the SIUE Center for Predictive Analytics (C-PAN) and the Faculty Senate to identify and approve new admission criteria. Data from C-PAN showed that GPA is more important overall than ACT test scores as a predictor of student retention at SIUE. This policy shift is among the steps the University has taken to build a more just and equitable environment for all members of our community.”

Of the first-year students, 81% are from Illinois, and 142 of those Illinois residents benefited from the University’s new financial program: the SIUE Commitment. Overall, the student body represents 44 states and 62 countries.

Those families completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and had an income below $63,575 per year. After Pell and MAP grants and any merit scholarships were applied, SIUE filled the financial gap by enabling the 142 students to enroll without using any out-of-pocket resources to cover tuition and fees.

Additionally, the SIUE Commitment filled the gap for 98 new transfers. Altogether, 240 students received an average of $1,519 to cover full-time tuition and mandatory fees with aid that does not need to be paid back. SIUE will continue this program as long as the state of Illinois’ AIM High program is active.

“The SIUE Commitment is an ideal use of AIM High funds, which are deployed to keep talented Illinois students in state,” said Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management Scott Belobrajdic. “We were able to provide a new need-based aid source to deserving students. We are thrilled to have these students as part of our first-year class and SIUE’s Cougar family.”

International enrollment jumped 48% (174 students) over fall 2020 and matched an all-time high for SIUE. International students account for 4.1% of campus enrollment. Director of Graduate and International Admissions James Monahan attributes the rise to several years of relationship building with overseas partners, and a bit of pandemic-related built-up demand.

“I’m proud of our team’s efforts to remain in contact with international applicants over the past year and half, so when embassies and consulates started opening mid-summer we were ready to work with hundreds of qualified admitted students,” he said. “Our Schools of Business and Engineering, and our immigration team in International Student Services remained flexible as students made last-minute decisions to join the University.”

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville provides students with a high-quality, affordable education that prepares them for successful careers and lives of purpose to shape a changing world. Built on the foundation of a broad-based liberal education, and enhanced by hands-on research and real-world experiences, the academic preparation SIUE students receive equips them to thrive in the global marketplace and make our communities better places to live. Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop the bluffs overlooking the natural beauty of the Mississippi River’s rich bottomland and only a short drive from downtown St. Louis, the SIUE campus is home to a diverse student body of more than 13,000.

Ponddy Education Develops Revolutionary Ponddy Chinese Dictionary App

Announcing the world’s first Chinese Dictionary app aligned to the new Chinese proficiency grading standards

Ponddy Education Inc. announces the immediate release of its Chinese Dictionary App to assist students in their quest to learn Chinese. Ponddy Chinese Dictionary is the first Chinese Dictionary App to align its vocabulary with the new Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education.

The New Grading Standards for Chinese language proficiency require a consistent approach to evaluating a learner’s ability to recognize and use characters, syllables and grammar in verbal and written communication activities, including listening, speaking, reading, writing, translating, and interpreting. Learners are graded according to three levels and nine bands of competency.

When students use the Ponddy Chinese Dictionary to look up a vocabulary word, the app displays multiple features that correspond to the word, including the pinyin, part of speech, translation, standardized level, sample sentences, and related images. The dictionary app also suggests related words to extend learning as students acquire vocabulary through integrated exercises.

Practice results are updated to create progress reports in real-time, helping students identify learning gaps and manage progress.

Ponddy Education’s Commitment to Excellence in Chinese Language Instruction

The Ponddy Chinese Dictionary is the first Chinese dictionary app published with leveled vocabulary aligned to the New Grading Standards. Using adaptive branching techniques, the novel app presents word searches, integration exercises, progress reports, and live lessons for additional support. This app is a perfect tool for learners to prepare for the rigorous Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) Chinese Proficiency Test.

The Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission of China announced that the new Chinese language proficiency standards will be implemented worldwide on July 1st, 2021. Because of this change, the HSK test also will align with the required Chinese Proficiency standards in 2022.

The standardized HSK test identifies three levels of Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers, such as international students and Chinese students living overseas. Foreign students must show Chinese language competency by passing the HSK test before enrolling in a college in China.

The Ponddy Chinese Dictionary assists learners with these benchmarks, evaluations, and skills.

Ponddy Chinese Dictionary App Features

By providing immediate user feedback, the Ponddy Chinese Dictionary App allows learners to:

1. Look up words
When retrieving a learner’s vocabulary word, the app presents multiple characteristics and dimensions. Ponddy’s AI technology recommends similar search results and helps learners extend their scope of learning. Additionally, learners can save their vocabulary searches and later pick up where they left off.

2. Confirm learning
Learners can consolidate any vocabulary with integrated exercises, followed by three settings, including translation, pronunciation and pinyin order.

3. Visualize progress
Every student profile indicates learning levels and creates progress reports in real-time based on the student’s history record and query. The app encourages learners to understand their learning progress and share their learning results with their community.

4. Engage in live, personalized lessons
Ponddy provides online Chinese courses as a supplement. Learners can take Online Chinese courses with a one-on- one certified teacher and AI language platform.

Why the New Grading Standards Alignment Matters

Data indicates a critical need for the Ponddy Chinese Dictionary app, the most effective learning tool for the 25 million Chinese language learners outside of China. According to China Daily, more than 75 countries now include the Chinese language in their national education systems. University students learn Chinese at one of over 4,000 campuses worldwide.

Furthermore, the New Grading Standards “will become the basis of international Chinese language examinations, provide a reference for the curriculum design, textbook compilation, classroom teaching, and testing of international Chinese education around the world, and it will provide an important basis for the construction of various new models and platforms of international Chinese education.”

International communication and cultural continuity depend on language standards like those established by the new grading standards. The Ponddy Chinese app puts AI learning in the hands of Chinese learners everywhere.

Educator Testimony

Already educators have praised the Ponddy Chinese Dictionary app.

“I highly recommend the Ponddy Chinese Dictionary app to Chinese instructors and students,” said Yinghui Wu, Dean of Research Institute of International Chinese Language Education / Dean of Research Institute of Overseas Chinese Education.“This is the first app with vocabulary graded according to the new Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education. It doesn’t only have all the functions and resources of a general dictionary, but also has AI technology to provide relevant practices for learners. It will greatly improve the efficiency of Chinese teaching and learning.”

Multi-Millionaire Stock Trading Veteran to Offer Free Training

Robert Ivan, who learned the ins and outs of stock trading while in prison, shares his hard-earned wisdom

Robert Ivan, the noted stock trading expert, today announced that he is now offering his hard-earned wisdom with investors, though free training on stocks, foreign exchange trading and crypto on his website, IvanTrades.com. For Ivan, whose path to Wall Street began while he was serving 10 years in prison for bank robbery, the move represents a chance to share his success with others.

Ivan, who has made more than $35 million tradings, said, “When wisdom is given, you can’t just shelve it, you have to teach the younger generation what we learn in life.”

While in prison, Ivan was given a Bible by a man working with him in the kitchen. The man told Ivan, “You don’t know me, man, but God told me to give you my Bible.”

Ivan said, “I was shocked because I hadn’t told anyone that a few days before this, I had realized how lost in life I felt and that if I was wrong about God and he was real, that he could help me.”

For the next 18 months, Ivan kept praying and talking to God, only to be met with silence. But one night, while lying in bed, Ivan said the air in the room condensed and then a huge wave of electricity came over him. He knew right then that it was God and that he was real.

Following that experience, Ivan met another man who also changed his life. He taught Ivan how to buy and sell stocks and trade foreign exchange. Ivan listened to him because he had worked at the New York Stock Exchange as a trader. For hours upon a time, they would sit together in the prison library and the man would teach Ivan everything he knew.

Ivan was released in 2011 and in 2018, using everything he learned in prison, he started trading.

In addition to helping others learn the art of trading, Ivan also has a weekly Bible podcast.

“When students join my live chats and mentorship, they get more than just watching me trade live each day,” Ivan said. “They get my trading advice, they get life mastery advice and they get a real friend to help them reach their goals. It is what sets IvanTrades.com apart from any other mentorship program out there.”
