Save Thousands of Gallons of Water By Knowing How To Turn Off Your Sprinklers Manually

Has your sprinkler system ever ran uncontrollably? This is a common problem that can cost homeowners thousands of gallons of water and hundreds of dollars.

Almost every day we get calls from frantic homeowners who wake up and see their sprinklers running when they aren’t supposed to be. Confused, they go to the timer in the garage and turn the switch off. They are surprised to see the sprinklers still running. With money literally washing down the street, they need to act quickly. This guide will show anyone how to shut off sprinklers manually without shutting off water to the home.

This blog is written by licensed professionals in the Dallas metroplex. These tips are based on what we see in the field for our area. Acting quickly in these situations saves hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water.

Materials Needed:
Turning off sprinklers manually can be done without any tools if the backflow device is visible and in good condition. If not, these tools may be necessary.

Shovel possibly
Pliers possibly
Hand water pump possibly

Step One – Find the backflow box

Generally in a regular neighbourhood lot sprinkler systems have what is called a double check backflow device. These are located in a big rectangular box on the ground. Typically, the box is located within 10′ of the city water meter. It could be on the other side of the sidewalk as well if applicable. In some instances, we have seen backflow devices located in the flowerbeds near the house.

Still, having trouble finding the backflow? It’s probably covered with grass.

Locating a buried backflow can be a pain but here is how we approach it. We look at the neighbour’s house and see if we can locate their backflow easily. Chances are it is in a similar spot. From there use a shovel to poke around in the yard. Look first in a similar spot as your neighbours, then all around the water meter within a 10′ radius, lastly in the flowerbeds. When the shovel hits the plastic box it will be obvious.

Step Two – Gain Access

The next is to gain access to the device. With a properly maintained backflow skip this step. Unless the box is full of water.

If the box is full of water, use a hand pump as shown above to pump the water out quickly. These tools can be purchased at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Often, when we open up the lid the backflow is surrounded by mud. If this is the case, clean out around the backflow to gain access to the handles. Ideally, there should be no dirt touching the backflow while it’s in the box.

Step Three – Turn Off Backflow

Now that the backflow is cleared and accessible we’re able to shut off the sprinklers. Again, with a properly maintained backflow, this step can be easy. When the water is on the handles will be parallel to the pipe. If the water is off the handle will be perpendicular to the pipe. To shut off the backflow turn one of the handles 90 degrees. Now, these handles only turn in one direction. Look at the base of the handle you’ll see metal stoppers that will indicate which way it turns.

Note: Don’t mess with the test ports on the top of the backflow device.

We sometimes experience stuck handles or even missing handles if they are rusted. This is where the pliers come in. Before using the pliers be sure to turn the handle in the right direction. If you use pliers grab onto the nut in the middle and turn that instead of the handle.

That’s It!

Once the handle is turned fully perpendicular the water should be off. To confirm this make sure the metal stoppers are touching. Typically, only one handle needs to be turned off. However, we have seen where one valve doesn’t close all the way letting water pass through. If this happens, turn off the other handle. We recommend replacing your backflow every 10 years as well as regularly cleaning out the box to keep the device from rusting. Yearly testing is also required by most cities which ensures this device still works internally.

Veni, Vidi, Vici – New Study Looks at the Personality of People Who Would Prefer To Win an Argument Rather Than Compromise

A recent study by PsychTests.com reveals that people would rather win an argument than find a mutually beneficial solution are more likely to have control issues, to struggle with rumination, and to be uncomfortable with emotions in general.

Conflict is unpleasant, uncomfortable, loud, and vocal – but it can be so much worse when both parties go into it with the sole intention of being proven right. Without compromise, conflict can drag on incessantly, or rise from the grave to haunt every subsequent argument where parties hash out grievances from decades ago. Why is it that some people would rather win a fight at any cost than make concessions? According to research from PsychTests.com, a dislike for compromise is about more than just the pursuit of victory or bragging rights.

Analyzing data collected from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, PsychTests’ researchers compared the personality, attitudes, and behaviors of people who would rather win an argument vs. those who would rather compromise. Here’s where they differed:

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WIN AN ARGUMENT TEND TO HAVE A CYNICAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFE.

  • 45% are pessimists who tend to expect the worst of every situation or person (compared to 30% of Compromisers).
  • 26% have trust issues and refuse to place their faith in anyone (compared to 10% of Compromisers).
  • 31% feel that others take advantage of them (compared to 21% of Compromisers).

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WIN AN ARGUMENT CAN BE UNSCRUPULOUSLY OPPORTUNISTIC

  • 33% only do good deeds for the recognition (compared to 16% of Compromisers).
  • 37% will use insincere flattery in order to get what they want from someone (compared to 17% of Compromisers).

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WIN AN ARGUMENT STRUGGLE WITH THEIR EMOTIONS AS WELL AS OTHER PEOPLE’S

  • 46% feel uncomfortable around people who are overtly emotional (compared to 25% of Compromisers).
  • 44% postpone or entirely avoid discussing touchy topics (compared to 31% of Compromisers).
  • 55% feel awkward in social situations (compared to 44% of Compromisers).
  • 37% tend to suppress negative emotions (compared to 28% of Compromisers).
  • 38% have anger management issues (compared to 19% of Compromisers).
  • 54% admit that they tend to be very impatient (compared to 29% of Compromisers).
  • 53% will do whatever they can to keep themselves from crying (compared to 39% of Compromisers).
  • Ironically, 40% would rather avoid conflict entirely (compared to 2% of Compromisers).

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WIN AN ARGUMENT TEND TO DWELL ON NEGATIVE THOUGHTS, FEELINGS OR PROBLEMS

  • 40% spend hours ruminating over perceived insults (compared to 25% of Compromisers).
  • 54% overanalyze situations, creating problems that don’t exist (compared to 40% of Compromisers).
  • 39% have difficulty breaking out of a bad mood (compared to 20% of Compromisers).

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WIN AN ARGUMENT TEND TO HAVE AN INTENSE NEED FOR CONTROL, TO BE IN CHARGE, OR TO BE RIGHT

  • 36% need to be the one to “call the shots” at work or in their personal lives (compared to 14% of Compromisers).
  • 33% insist that tasks or chores be done their way (compared to 10% of Compromisers).
  • 19% refuse to accept opinions that differ from their own (compared to 5% of Compromisers).
  • 68% tend to be very stubborn (compared to 47% of Compromisers).

PEOPLE WHO WANT TO WIN AN ARGUMENT ARE MORE LIKELY TO HAVE UNHAPPY RELATIONSHIPS

  • 34% rated the quality of their personal relationships as “Excellent” (compared to 53% of Compromisers).
  • 33% rated the quality of their professional relationships as “Excellent” (compared to 47% of Compromisers).
  • 32% admit that they find themselves in conflict situations more often than other people they know (compared to 11% of Compromisers).
  • 10% admit that they can be difficult to get along with (compared to 2% of Compromisers).
  • 15% find it difficult to bond with other people (compared to 9% of Compromisers).

“Imagine what would happen if every person taking part in a peace talk or major negotiation went into it with the sole intention of winning, regardless of the cost – it would lead to chaos. Life isn’t a game show where only one person can come out victorious,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “The same applies to conflict. Evidently, there will be circumstances where there is no room for compromise. In most cases, however, meeting someone halfway, making concessions, and finding a mutually beneficial solution is the ideal path. If all you do is fight to win, regardless of the cost, you end up losing in the end – either the deal or negotiation itself, and most certainly your relationship with the other person. Unfortunately, some people mistake compromise for weakness; they feel that compromising is taking the sucker’s way out. In reality, finding a solution that benefits everyone is what takes the most work, strength, and dedication.”

“Transform Your Story Into An Online Course Business” is the inaugural course offering led by Brandon Westbrook, founder of Westbrook & Company

How do you identify your personal story? Storytelling is powerful. Taking that story and turning it into a growing business that you can own is increasingly powerful. To help people get started on this journey, enter Westbrook & Company with the launch of their first course “Transform Your Story Into An Online Course Business”. Founded by Brandon Westbrook, an entrepreneur based out of Oakland, California, this online course is designed for anyone who wants to share their story with the world and package it into a business.

Brandon decided to start Westbrook & Company based on revelations about his own life story. The root of that story was based on a desire and passion for entrepreneurship. While navigating the business world as a young black man, and not seeing the opportunity for entrepreneurial growth, ownership, and community be readily available for many other black professionals, Brandon decided it was time to build a platform for himself that can impact others alike.

SIU School of Dental Medicine Dean Rotter to Retire in December

Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD, MS, announced his retirement today, effective December 2021. Rotter was named SDM dean in Nov. 2012 after serving as interim dean for more than a year.

SIU School of Dental Medicine Dean Bruce Rotter

Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIU SDM) Dean Bruce Rotter, DMD, MS, announced his retirement today, effective December 2021. Rotter was named SDM dean in Nov. 2012 after serving as interim dean for more than a year.

An SIU SDM Class of 1982 alumnus, Rotter joined the SDM as a faculty member in 1993. He brought a unique perspective to the dean’s position, fully participating in the SDM’s progress as a student, faculty member and administrator.

“On behalf of SIUE and the SIU School of Dental Medicine, I want to thank Dean Rotter for nearly 30 years of service,” said Chancellor Randy Pembrook. “Bruce has an incredibly informed perspective having been a part of SDM as a student, faculty member and long-serving administrator. In particular, I want to commend Dean Rotter and the School for their dedication to the community as evidenced by their free clinics for Veterans and the Give Kids a Smile Program which annually provide more than $100,000 of free dental service to valued constituencies, as well as their work at the WE CARE Clinic in East St. Louis. We wish Bruce and his wife, Cindy, best wishes as they plan for retirement in 2022.”

Rotter was SDM associate dean for academic affairs for six years prior to serving as interim dean. He joined the SDM faculty as an assistant professor in 1993, was named associate professor in 1997 and professor in 2009. During that time, Rotter created and administered one of the first implant fellowship training programs in the country. That program led to the creation of a freestanding implant clinic, which he designed, helped develop and directed.

Highlights of Rotter’s distinguished career include:

  • Three times led the School through reaccreditation from the Council on Dental Accreditation.
  • Jan. 2021, Appointed Cornell Thomas, DDS, as SDM chief diversity officer and director of the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) to increase concentration on diversity, equity, inclusion and well-being.
  • Nov. 2020, was elected vice chair of the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA), the national programmatic accrediting agency for dental and dental-related education programs at the post-secondary level.
  • Nov. 2020, launched SDM clinical endodontic training graduate program.
  • April 2019, SDM received a $2 million grant from the Illinois Children’s Healthcare Foundation (ILCHF). The SDM is building a medical operating suite with general anesthesia capabilities for children with special dental care needs within a new Advanced Care Patient Clinic.
  • Feb. 2017, SDM showcased its renovated clinic in University Park on the Edwardsville campus, expanding the scope of the SDM’s available care, providing that care to a greater demographic and esnuring an even higher level of training to SDM students.
  • March 2014, SDM’s new and expanded presence in Alton earned an Award of Achievement from Pride, Incorporated, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to community beautification. The award recognized the construction of the School’s Multidisciplinary Simulation Laboratory and adjacent space, an 18,000-square-foot, $9.5 million project.

Throughout his academic career, Rotter continued to be active in the private practice of oral and maxillofacial surgery in order to maintain his knowledge and skills while bringing that experience to the academic setting. He has worked with Southern Illinois Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Ltd., in Belleville and Glen Carbon since 2002 until his appointment as dean. He also has served the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in St. Louis as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon and/or consultant since 1994.

A member of 15 dental professional associations, Rotter has been elected to fellowship by the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Rotter has been associated with more than a dozen hospitals throughout his career including affiliations with St. Anthony’s Medical Center in Alton, Belleville Memorial Hospital, Healthsouth Surgical Center in Belleville and the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in St. Louis.

The SIU School of Dental Medicine students manage approximately 35,000 patient visits each year at its patient clinics in Alton and East St. Louis. In addition, students offer oral health treatment, screenings and education to more than 10,000 people annually through a wide variety of off-campus community outreach events. These opportunities provide students the training they need to graduate and become highly skilled dentists. The School of Dental Medicine is a vital oral health care provider for residents of southern and central Illinois, and the St. Louis metropolitan region.

“Fostering is hard; it’s easier as a team,” says Sarah. “The Foster Lane helps support biological parents by offering coaching aimed at removing barriers to reunification as well as foster parents by offering coaching aimed at creating more connecting moments for however long the child lives in their home.”

Sarah’s approach is cooperative and nonjudgmental. She runs her coaching programs via Zoom and in person, working collaboratively with parents and building on their strengths while offering a future-focused, action-oriented approach to solving difficulties and challenges. As Sarah began to see positive results from her approach to parenting, she took the advice of her child’s social worker and completed a graduate-level program with the Parent Coach Institute (PCI). This led to her establishing her business as a parent coach.

Welcome to the Foster Lane represents the culmination of her own experience as a foster parent, along with knowledge gathered from other parenting experts.

“The intention of the book is to raise awareness and normalize parenting struggles and successes while raising a child in out of home care,” says Sarah. “Regardless of their treatment, children maintain a strong connection to their biological parents in their minds and hearts; the faster a foster parent is able to honor the child’s family of origin, the faster they will be able to develop a meaningful connection with that child; fostering has many challenging aspects and parents need support.”

When she first started fostering, Sarah found an almost complete lack of information or support available and had to do her own research, motivating her to write a blog based on her experiences, and then to launch a book.

The ebook will be released on May 21, and the paperback on June 25.
