Stonewall National Museum and Archives Launches Interactive Online LGBTQ History Timelines

Coincides with LGBTQ History Month / In Plain Sight can be accessed virtually or in-person at the museum’s touchscreen displays

Stonewall National Museum and Archives, the largest LGBTQ cultural organization in Florida and one of the largest LGBTQ archives and libraries in the United States, today launched In Plain Sight, an engaging digital experience that brings to live pivotal LGBTQ milestones and achievements.

In Plain Sight [stonewallnma.org] provides factual historic records and up-to-date information about people who have come out in different professional areas. It features more than 800 entries with brief descriptions and zoom-in capabilities for high-res photos organized in 10 categories: AIDS/HIV, Arts, Business, Film/TV, Literature, Memorials, Milestones, Music, Sports, and Theatre/Dance. Far more than an interactive display, the team designed an engaging curriculum that provides in-depth education and opportunities to interact with existing material from the archival collection available at the museum.

For centuries there was a tremendous stigma associated with being gay. From both a religious and civil perspective people have been ostracized because of who they love. This prejudice has caused a tremendous amount of hardship for many people.

Over the past few decades, students and proponents of gay studies and gay rights have looked at LGBTQ history to understand where the bias comes from and how people have worked to overcome that stigma. This work is done to improve the people today and future generations.

Understanding LGBTQ history of bias is important to anyone who cares about racism, sexism, ageism, or any form of discrimination. It is important to anyone who cares about breaking down barriers and creating an inclusive society.

Hunter O’Hanian, Executive Director of Stonewall commented, “For years, a static LGBTQ timeline showcased in a wall became one of the museum’s most popular areas. We wanted to expand its reach to online audiences at a time when visits to cultural institutions are restricted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, while making it timelier and more inclusive regarding gender and race.”

In Plain Sight was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Florida Humanities Council. The project was developed in partnership with our research team and multidisciplinary digital firm DreamCatcherMKT.

The Timeliness can be accessed in-person at the museum or online at stonewallnma.org in desktop or mobile devices. The in-person experience consists of two large touchscreen displays and an engaging curriculum that allows students and visitors to explore and examine copies of items, such as buttons, t-shirts, papers, periodicals, and other artifacts contained in the archives. The goal is to provide an interactive discussion that enhances the learning experience of our history.

Visitors are encouraged to schedule an appointment or one-on-one tour by calling (954) 763-8565 Monday – Friday from 11am to 5pm or Saturdays from 11am to 3pm. The museum is following strict COVID-19 health guidelines.

The Complete History of Cars

The Complete History of Cars

Cars are amazing and it is quite difficult for us to imagine our daily routine without seeing them or driving one. From luxury cars to sports cars to electric vehicles or simple cars used primarily as a means of transportation or as a show-off, it is no wonder that these four-wheeled shiny toys have become a hobby for people like me and you. But, how much do you know about the history of the cars you’re driving now? Do you know how the first one was built and how it has improved over the years? Well, we’re here to give you that information, so fasten your seatbelt as we take you back in time to the 1800s!

The early years of automobile production were highly dominated by the Europeans as the first practical automobile with a petrol engine was built by German inventor Karl Benz in 1886. This three-wheeled Motorwagen was test-ran by his wife, Bertha Benz, who drove it on the first long-distance trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim and back in 1888. After her trip, Karl Benz got the insight to add more improvements like four wheels, fuel tank, and rear brakes to make it look more like a car and less than a horse carriage.

Wilhelm Maybach of Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft designed the first Mercedes in 1901 when he created a 35hp engine that weighed 14pounds and achieved a top speed of 53miles per hour. This success opened up the automobile industry and more car manufacturers began to spring up. But the market size for the automobile industry was relatively small as cars were expensive and time-consuming to produce, so they were rather too costly for people to buy.

The automobile industry began to spread to other continents and by the first half of the twentieth century, the industry became dominated by the Americans as more than 30 automakers produced 2,500 vehicles in 1899. In 1908, Henry Ford built Model T – the first car that was affordable and easily accessed by most average families. The Ford Motor Company also invented the assembly line that was used for the mass production of cars and by 1918, most households owned a Model T automobile. As time went on, Ford’s Model T became cheaper to buy the price dropped from $850 to $260 due to the mass production technique used by the company and around 15million were sold.

Williams C. Durant also established General Motors in 1908 and as more car companies sprung up, varieties of car designs began to flood the market and people had access to cheaper automobiles. By 1920, Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors emerged as the “Big Three” auto companies that produced cars for the general public. But Ford Motor Company refuse to upgrade its designs and General Motors overtook them by owning more than 48% of the market share, slightly followed by Chrysler with 25%. In 1930, The Great Depression crumbled the growing auto industry as many car companies suffered from bankruptcy and had to shut down. This lead to less competition and the “Big Three” continued to produce cars for the general public.

During the Second World War, car production stopped as the government used manufacturing facilities to produce military vehicles and weapons – thereby halting the production of personal cars. After the end of World War II, personal car production resumed but American automakers were unable to make safe and defect-free vehicles. Also with the imposition of federal standards of automotive safety (1966), increasing fuel prices following the oil shocks of 1973 and 1879, emission of pollutants (1965 and 1970), and energy consumption (1975), car production fell into the hands of the Europeans and Japanese who could make vehicles that adhered to these new regulations.
During this period, companies merged with Japanese companies like Toyota to get car parts and assemble them in the U.S, thereby helping Japanese automakers to infiltrate the U.S markets at a cheaper price. And Honda became the first Japanese automaker to open plants in Canada and the United States.

The 1980s came with lots of improvements as car production increased due to the influence of globalization, more people bought cars due to stable prices and by 1990, the SUVs became a popular demand. The coming 2000s also saw major technological advancement in the auto industry as cars running on electric batteries were manufactured and it was easier to obtain credit to purchase expensive automobiles.

By 2010, the auto industry evolved as fuel-efficient and sustainable vehicles were produced, more add-on luxury was included and drivers had more options regarding what kind of cars to buy. And in 2020, we saw an increase in the production of safe electric and self-driven vehicles for pollution-free earth.
In conclusion, cars have evolved from the simple Model T to the somewhat complicated designs of electric vehicles, and we can’t wait to see the next big thing in the auto industry.

New Book Refutes Russian Claims to Special Status in Antarctica

Oxford historian dismisses the claim that Russia discovered Antarctica, and warns that Russia may use that claim to demand special rights in the region.

In his new book Oxford-based Antarctic historian Rip Bulkeley presents detailed arguments in rebuttal of Russian claims in respect of Antarctica. He argues that the historical claim, first put forward in 1949, that a Russian naval expedition was the first to sight the mainland coast on 28 January 1820, is not supported by the surviving evidence, and that over the years a variety of falsifications and fallacies have been used to make it stick. A lesser related claim, that key Antarctic place names were first bestowed by that expedition, was first put forward in 1958 on totally fallacious grounds. Both historical claims have recently been endorsed by President Putin. Ever since 1949 Soviet and Russian leaders have argued that the first discovery entitles their country to special rights in respect of the Antarctic continent.

After 72 years of misrepresentation of Antarctic history, according to Bulkeley, Russian public opinion is now confused and ill-informed. The belief that Russians discovered Antarctica is widely shared because it forms part of the national school syllabus. However, it amounts to little more than “loyalty to a historical myth which has regrettably acquired the status of fact”. In the context of climate change, however, and with the central pillar of the Antarctic Treaty System, the Protocol on Environmental Protection, due for revision in 2048, such beliefs and the claim to special status in Antarctica, all of which form part of Russian Antarctic policy today, may shortly give rise to international conflict in the Antarctic to match the problems which observers have already been reporting from the Arctic.

New Documentary Short Reveals that Butch Cassidy Died in Utah, Decades After Previously Believed

The official version of the story says that legendary outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fled to South America, where they were gunned down in a shootout with the Bolivian Army in 1908. But with three decades of research, historian Marilyn Grace has uncovered DNA evidence that proves that both of the famous outlaws not only returned to the United States but lived for decades under assumed identities in Utah.

Historian Marilyn Grace

Marilyn made headlines in 2009 when her team dug up a grave in Utah’s Duchesne City Cemetery, hoping to prove that William Henry Long was, in fact, the Sundance Kid. DNA obtained along with Marilyn’s extensive research ultimately proved that he died in 1936, a Utah rancher with a shady reputation and a mysterious past.

Now Marilyn is about to make headlines again with a new documentary short film that has been completed after her discovery of what she believes to be Butch Cassidy’s unmarked grave at the Parker Ranch in Utah’s Little Dog Valley. The ten-minute documentary, titled “Butch Cassidy After Bolivia,” tells the story of what really happened to Robert LeRoy Parker, aka Butch Cassidy, who died in Circleville, Utah, on July 20, 1937.

Watch “Butch Cassidy After Bolivia” now on YouTube: https://youtu.be/15EsiEWhXEE

A native of Utah, Marilyn Grace has spent the last three decades searching for the truth about what really happened to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. She is the author of “Finding Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid,” “Butch Cassidy: Mormon Boy Dies in Utah,” and “The Secret Life of Butch Cassidy After Bolivia,” all of which expand on her research and reveal the greatest outlaw mystery of all time. All three books are available now at Amazon and SundanceKidDNA.com.
