New Guide Offers Strategies to Achieve Culture Transformation Through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Business leaders struggling to figure out return to office and best approaches to engage employees

As part of a successful diversity strategy, corporate leaders must take the time to realign and shift workplace values and organizational standards to support a positive, inclusive, and high-performing work environment.

Corporate leaders are also struggling with how to develop return to office strategies, where many diverse groups say they want a more flexible schedule during this post-pandemic period, according to a recent McKinsey study

In this informative and instructive guide, “Achieving Culture Transformation Through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” KEIRUS by KJE, a seven-year-old strategy consulting, technology and leadership development firm, offers business leaders recommendations on how to develop successful DEI strategies and behaviors that lead to a winning culture.

“Ever since George Floyd, some companies have taken steps to address diversity and inclusion within their organizations,” said Kelley Johnson, the company’s founder and CEO. “But many are still stuck. That’s leaving a lingering question for many of these business leaders, ‘Now what?’”

In the guide, Johnson clearly spells out what leaders can do to change. “Leaders committed to culture transformation value the business case for DEI and its influence on innovation and creativity,” she explains. “Transformative leaders understand the importance of modeling cultural agility and consistently embracing the arc of change.”?

The guide lays out the role of the leader in driving culture transformation, what steps they can take to improve their corporate culture and employee engagement and how these changes have a direct impact on improving a company’s ROI.

Johnson says leaders better engage with their employees when they can build trust. They can build more trust by spending more time exploring their employees’ personal beliefs and biases, embracing the value of everyone’s uniqueness, and creating “authentic and mutual connections.”

KEIRUS’ experience working with companies of all sizes also shows that toxic workplaces create tension, lack of trust, and ‘quiet quitting’ – ultimately leading to unhappy – and unproductive – employees.

“When employees understand that it is okay to be different and authentic,” Johnson says, “you create a culture where everyone contributes fully and are more likely to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion. These factors spark a transition in the workplace culture where intersectionality and innovation are at the forefront.”

Additionally, KEIRUS by KJE’s guide urges leaders to identify areas to improve; collect data to measure, monitor and assess progress; challenge limited mindsets to encourage diverse thought; change behaviors by “engaging heads, hearts and hands” and providing consistent feedback and commitment to its team members.

Adds Johnson, “We know the culture transformation process is not cookie-cutter or a check-the-box exercise. It should reflect the individual organization as an integral part of their mission and values.”

Success does begin at the top, the guide asserts. “If leaders aren’t on board with the vision, progress is limited. “The leader must also understand that transformation is a long-haul undertaking and will not happen overnight; diligence, difficult conversations, and perseverance are critical to results.”

Rescue Air Systems Signs Product Development Agreements With Five Fire Service Industry Leaders

Exclusive partnerships cement RescueAir’s leadership position in the Firefighter Air Replenishment System (FARS) Industry.

Rescue Air Systems, the world’s leading designer and manufacturer of firefighter air replenishment systems (FARS), recently signed product development agreements with five of the leading breathing air equipment manufacturers serving the fire service: Arctic Compressor, EMNET, Eagle Air Breathing Air Systems, Hydraulics International, and Lifeline Firehose.

The agreements represent a strategic alliance between six of the country’s top innovators in fire safety, compressed air equipment, and air delivery systems, and expands RescueAir’s leadership position beyond the FARS industry. Together, the parties will improve existing products, develop new technologies, and manufacture and distribute new products that support life safety for the fire service, business, and industry.

Under the agreements, the partners will each retain sole manufacturing rights. FARS product distribution will flow exclusively through RescueAir’s existing network of certified installers. That network is comprised by dozens of mechanical and fire protection companies across the United States, all of which are currently licensed to use RescueAir technology.

“This is an important step forward for firefighter safety and for our company,” said RescueAir CEO Anthony J. Turiello. “Like us, each of the partners has a track record of innovation, developing products that have become industry standards. Nearly 20 years ago, RescueAir developed and brought to market the world’s first budling-installed breathing air replenishment system for firefighters, a standpipe for air that eliminated the need to hand-carry replacement air bottles up numerous flights of stairs in a high-rise, or deep into large horizontal structures. FARS are now required by code in 20 states, and the number is growing. In collaboration with our five industry partners, we are uniquely positioned to bring smarter, faster, safer, and more efficient products to the fire service, broaden our product line, and continue our commitment to using technology to improve and enhance life safety.”

“ENMET was pleased to be selected as the breathing air monitoring component of the RescueAir Firefighter Air Replenishment Systems (FARS) requirement,” said ENMET President Norman Davis. “Our collaboration with RescueAir to build a custom monitoring product produced a world-class solution to make cities safer.”

Hydraulics International President Bahman Seifollahi echoed the long term positive impact of the partnership. “RescueAir has been working in collaboration with Hydraulics International for over a decade,” he said. “Working together, the Hydraulics International and RescueAir teams have created a unique, system-critical solution for the FARS market which will be a reliable component of the RescueAir FARS system for decades to come. We are excited to be RescueAir’s partner in supporting the life-saving work of first responders.”

ABOUT RESCUE AIR SYSTEMS/FARS
Rescue Air Systems is the world’s leading provider of firefighter air replenishment systems (FARS). Founded in 1993, the company was borne out of the ashes of the First Interstate Bank Building fire, one of the most devastating high-rise fires in California history. Hand carrying replacement air bottles to firefighters on upper floors was identified as a major strain on manpower and a serious obstacle to fighting that fire. As a solution, Company founder Anthony Turiello envisioned a building-installed air standpipe system that would deliver air the same way water standpipes deliver water. His innovation, FARS, is a faster, safer and more reliable method for the delivery of life-sustaining air. Today, FARS are required by code in 20 states. Code standards for FARS can be found in the ICC International Fire Code Appendix L. rescueair.com

How to be an Effective Leader: Perspective from Powerboat Racer Hugh D. Fuller

Effective leadership is an important skill to have that to some comes naturally and for others must be learned. For National Champion powerboat racer Hugh D. Fuller, leadership is at the core of everything he does. Whether he is racing on the water or at a board meeting for one of his successful businesses, Hugh D. Fuller is a rare example of an individual who knows how and when to lead. For Hugh Fuller, being a leader is more than just having people follow you. Instead, being a leader means setting an example for others, continuously working on self-improvement, and becoming a pillar of strength for your team.

Below, Hugh D. Fuller shares his thoughts on how to be an effective leader.

Setting an Example

Leading a successful team is difficult to do without first setting an example. It is vital for teams to see from their team leader what they can accomplish and become. For Hugh D. Fuller, this type of responsibility comes naturally. The energy, devotion, and quality that Fuller puts into all of his life’s work can be readily seen within the people he leads through a trickle-down effect. For example, powerboat racing, Fuller’s forte and life-long career, is not a one-man sport. Instead, he must work hand-in-hand with the throttleman to succeed in the sport.

“How can I expect my guys to give it their all during a race if I’m not doing the same? How can I think that my employees will go above and beyond if I’m not exemplifying that behavior first? It’s all about trust and communication here,” says Hugh D. Fuller.

Striving for Self-Improvement

While some leaders are naturally born, it is not always enough to rely on natural talent. Effective leaders are those that continue evolving in their leadership style and development. Developing new skills is not only effective for leaders but also gives the team a sense of clarity and direction. Hugh D. Fuller is certainly not one to rest upon his natural affinity for leadership. Fuller works with an array of teams in different settings and is able to successfully adapt his style of leadership to each.

“Self-care is important, self-improvement is vital, but so is drive. My drive leads me to want to be the best racer, the best boss, and the best person I can be,” says Hugh D. Fuller. “Continuously ask yourself how you can do better and challenge yourself to always improve.”

Supporting your Team

One of the most important aspects of successful leadership is keeping in mind your team’s individual needs. Teams that work well together are teams where every single member is supported. Much of this responsibility lies with the leader, whose role must also include fostering a culture of trust and respect within the team. As a powerboat racer, Hugh D. Fuller is no stranger to this dynamic. The trust that Fuller has garnered with his throttlemen and crew over the years is a trust which few people can claim to know.

“When we’re on the water and it’s just me and my throttleman, we form a deep bond and understanding. My throttlemen are my brothers, and the crew is no different. Whatever they need to make it work, I’m here to make it happen. Those relationships last decades,” says Hugh D. Fuller

When looking to become an effective leader, one must not only talk the talk but as Hugh D. Fuller so clearly shows, you have to be able to walk the walk. Setting yourself as an example, striving for self-improvement, and showing your team support are three pillars of leadership that cannot be overlooked. While Hugh D. Fuller experience as a powerboat racer is not one most people can relate to, his excellence as a leader can be easily translated to almost any setting.

Former GM and Bestselling Author Omar L. Harris announces New Book: Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss

Former GM (GSK and Allergan), Award-Winning and Bestselling Author, and DEI Thought Leader Omar L. Harris announces the release of the “most crucial and compelling business book of the year”: “Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss” today.

“Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss” by Former GM and Award-Winning and Bestselling Author Omar L. Harris is available starting today (June 25, 2021) in Paperback and eBook versions.

Based on 20+ years of executive experience leading diverse teams on four continents, Former GM, Bestselling Author, Intent Consulting Founder and Tympio.io Inclusion App Founder Omar L. Harris announces the launch of his new business book today: “Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss: Leadership in the Era of Corporate Social Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion” (June 25, 2021).

Harris emphasizes, “J.E.D.I. Leaders are a positive force for good pushing back on the dark forces at work. These modern leaders are finding ways for businesses to be more using the principles of Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (J.E.D.I.) in order to achieve the true purpose of corporations – increased value for employees, customers, communities, the environment and shareholders.”

By providing first-hand insights, new tools and solutions, Harris’ goal is to provide new hope and encourage business leaders to create a culture “where injustices are mitigated, inequities are eradicated, diversity is expanded, and inclusion is enhanced.”

As the only African-American GM in the world while working for global pharmaceutical giant Allergan in 2020, Harris believes strongly that leaders need to take action now to embrace J.E.D.I. Leadership and hire leadership teams that match diverse workforces.

With white males holding 85.8% of the Fortune 500 CEO positions in 2020 (yet only 35% of the population), Harris highlights to the need to “stop the guardians of the status quo.” In addition, white women only make up 6.8% of Fortune 500 CEOs, 3.4% are Latinx, 2.4% are East Asians or South Asians, and only 1% are African Americans, making the need for diversity in leadership even greater.

This new book includes timely topics such as the end of the boss, overcoming toxic egos, new tools (6As of J.E.D.I. Action) and case study examples of both individuals and companies. Readers will find extensive research of business thought leaders, authors, and reports including: Ibram X. Kendi (“How to Become an Antiracist”), Simon Sinek (“Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action”), When Women Thrive 2020 Global Report (Mercer, 2020), Kevin Johnson (“A message from Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson: Preparing for the next phase in the U.S.”), and Jasmyn Wimbish (“Adam Silver pens letter to employees deciding to strike in solidarity with NBA and WNBA players”, CBS Sports.)

Harris explains, read “Be a J.E.D.I. Leader, Not a Boss”:

  • If you believe business leaders should strive for more than profits, but don’t know how to get there.
  • If you are a leader looking to embrace the causes of social justice, equity, diversity and inclusion, and want a proven blueprint.
  • If you are joining a company and want your leaders to be aligned with cutting edge leadership.
  • If you are a DEI or HR professional looking for inspiration, reinforcement and new ideas.
  • If you are a business student or professor looking for DEI insights from someone who’s led global enterprise teams.
  • If you are a corporate leader who wants to learn how to go from shareholder to stakeholder capitalism using J.E.D.I. Leadership principles.

And in sync with this new book launch, Harris is gifting the eBook versions of his two most recent leadership books: “The Servant Leader’s Manifesto” (2020) and “Leader Board: The DNA of High-Performance Teams” for five days (June 25 – June 29, 2021).

NAIFA Expands Its Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) Product Line

The popular leadership development product line now includes an online cohort program option to allow NAIFA members to participate regardless of geographic boundaries.

The National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) is proud to announce the general availability of its online version of the Leadership in Life Institute (LILI) program. The online version of LILI is a new extension of the product line that allows for participants to undertake the six-month program without the need to travel.

“The addition of the online LILI program will allow more NAIFA members to participate and graduate from the LILI program, but also fits nicely into the NAIFA 2025 Strategic Plan’s aim to be more inclusive.

“We celebrated LILI’s twentieth anniversary in 2020—right in the middle of COVID,” explains Brad Tapscott, CFP, ChFC, CRPC, NAIFA’s LILI Committee Chair. “LILI has traditionally been delivered in a small group setting that would meet in-person monthly for six months. COVID put a stop to all LILI classes due to the in-person requirement. When we realized that travel was not going to be possible for the immediate future, the LILI Committee got to work on creating a new online version that could be delivered with the same impact and intensity.”

The small cohort group will remain as a cornerstone of the instructional design plan, but now, members may participate from anywhere in the United States, Guam, or Puerto Rico.

“The addition of the online LILI program will allow more NAIFA members to participate and graduate from the LILI program, but also fits nicely into the NAIFA 2025 Strategic Plan’s aim to be more inclusive. Taking away the geographic boundaries will especially benefit members that are in large-land states where a traditional in-person class would not have been feasible,” stated Kevin Mayeux, CEO of NAIFA. “This new addition to our professional development portfolio is just another example of NAIFA’s ability to innovate in a rapidly changing marketplace to continue to deliver real value to its members.”

The first online LILI class will be held beginning in May 2021. Each month a new cohort group will kick off its six-month program. All LILI graduates are included in an exclusive LILI Alumni Networking group and meet together during NAIFA’s annual professional development conference, Performance+Purpose.

To learn more about the LILI program, please visit: https://tdc.naifa.org/lili

The RemoteRated CEO List: Who Are the Top Leaders in Remote Work?

Remote leadership requires skills, perspective, & strategies not obvious to ‘traditional’ CEOs. We polled & researched to identify which CEOs excel.

The leadership and development of a remote organization requires skills, perspective, and strategies that might not be obvious to ‘traditional’ CEOs. We polled communities and researched for ourselves to identify which CEOs are truly excelling in leading their company, culture, and people in a remote world.
Factors we considered:

Communication: We gave strong consideration to CEOs with articulate public leadership with regard to the remote conversation. CEOs that are evangelizing best practices, employee empowerment, and remote transformation immediately became candidates.

Employee Endorsement: Has the CEO received praise, and positive testimonial online? (We chatted with employees, dug up articles, Tweets, Glassdoor mentions, etc.)

Company Growth: Has the company been innovating, expanding, hiring, and growing revenue throughout the madness of the pandemic? (An achievement unto itself!)

Products / Services: We gave consideration to CEOs leading companies that provide value, utility, or leadership to the remote world. Although this was a minimal criteria, and you’ll find that some company’s products on the list have almost nothing to do with remote work. That being said, we wanted to celebrate those CEOs that are proactively building companies that themselves are evolving remote work.

Who did we miss? Who else deserves recognition? Set them up on RemoteRated.com or send us a note to nominate them for our next list!
