Learning Space Race Game Teaches Times Tables

The newly released “TT Ultra” iOS Times Tables App uses a Space Race theme and learns children’s weak tables to help them practice more effectively.

Bit Loopy Games Limited has announced “TT Ultra”, its first edutainmentapp for Apple’s iOS platform. Bit Loopy Games was set up to bring innovative new games to market, but with the advent of the Covid-19 global lockdown, they decided to make their first release an app to help children with their education.

Built to help children with their times tables during the lockdown and beyond, the app was developed with the input of children in the 7-to-9 year age group. Working with the children has changed everything from the style of the game to the timer and the user interface.

Originally envisioned as a simple app to provide help quickly, it has bloomed into a much longer-term and in-depth project. The initial release includes a simple multiple-choice question format and choosing the correct answer gives the player’s ship a boost in the race to the planet. Get it wrong, and their ship is stalled for a short time. Either way, the correct answer is shown to allow the child to learn. When they do win the race, a new procedurally generated planet is created for the next, slightly harder race. Lose and there is a chance to replay the level.

The games take place over a set period and the timer has received special attention. Originally a simple countdown, it was changed after several children said they did not want the distraction and pressure of a ticking clock. Instead, a gentler timer was developed using coloured lights and the occasional chime. Similarly, after talking to their target audience, Bit Loopy added the skip-question and pause buttons.

Under the hood, the app is adaptive and uses each child’s answers to learn which questions and tables they find difficult. It will then gradually change the questions to allow the player to practise more effectively.

Parents are catered for with a series of built-in graphs showing them how their children are progressing, and this allows them to tailor the app via the selection of times tables and other options. Not only are the tables fully configurable but so are the questions via division, reversed, and missing place options. It is possible to change these settings per child via an in-app-purchase and then each have their own settings, app learning, and progress graphs.

The “TT Ultra” app is available now for free on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod from Apple’s App Store. It offers simple in-app-purchases for additional times tables, question options, extra players, and further graphs for parents. All purchases are safely behind a ‘parental gate’.

Kids Read Now is mailing books to students’ homes – Beating learning loss in Kentucky

Kids Read Now is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the singular mission to eliminate learning loss for all K-3 students

Kids Read Now has partnered with school districts across Kentucky, including Carroll County Schools, Montgomery County Schools, Berea Independent, and Elizabethtown Independent Schools, to mail books directly to their students’ homes over the summer. The number of students in the Kids Read Now program continues to grow with almost 400,000 books being mailed to students in 2020 alone!

Most students will experience reading skill loss over a typical summer break from school. Creating home libraries is key to preventing a steep learning slide due to summer break and recent extended school closures. “Students who participate in the KRN in-home reading program see gains up to 2.5 months of learning over the summer instead of succumbing to the summer slide,” said Leib Lurie, CEO of Kids Read Now.

“Kids Read Now is a great program to help children receive free books. Many of these children in our school population have few or no books within the household,” said Keisha J., Classroom Teacher, Carroll County Schools.

“It [KRN summer reading program] promotes reading!” said Stacie S., Library Media Specialist, Elizabethtown Independent Schools.

The Kids Read Now K-3 summer reading program mails eight new books to students and includes exciting multicultural, fiction, and nonfiction titles loved by children. Mailing books builds ongoing enthusiasm but does not require in-home technology. Each book includes guided discussion questions to help improve reading skills and increase family engagement. The ninth book of beautifully illustrated creative writing prompts concludes the program so children can write their own stories. Best of all, kids keep their new books!

‘The Be Books’ Series Offering Social Emotional Learning for Children During Pandemic

Each book from Lauren Grabois Fischer inspires children to be accepting, positive, grateful, and respectful

Author Lauren Grabois Fischer has created a series of children’s books called ‘The Be Books’, which are designed to entertain while also teaching acceptance, positivity, gratefulness, and respect through social-emotional learning. During these difficult times, parents and children need all the empowerment they can get, and Lauren is standing with others to make a difference.

The seven-book series includes “Be Who You Were Meant To Be”, “You Are A Superhero”, “Every So Often A Zebra Has Spots”, “Love Grows Love”, “The Light Within Me”, “Life”, and “The Zoo’s Big News”. The eighth book, “The ABCs To A Mindful Life”, is expected to debut in Spring 2021. Lauren’s books are written to promote social-emotional learning, a process by which children can acquire and apply the skills needed to understand and manage their emotions.

Each book is available in hardcover and paperback formats and includes additional pages in the back with activities and inspiration and discussion pages for further discussing the concepts of acceptance, kindness, and love.

According to Lauren, “One thing that I absolutely love is that my books are used frequently in the classroom and school environment. All of my books are used by many school counselors and teachers around the country. It is so important that we show support for all students and offer books that can help with their emotional well-being. I am so grateful that my books are used in schools as Social Emotional Learning books.”

Her book “Life,” which was released in May 2020, is dedicated to her father-in-law, who passed away due to COVID-19. It is also dedicated to her grandfather who she lost in October 2020. In the back of the book is an excerpt on COVID.

“I believe in a world full of kindness and peace. I want my children and all children to grow up in a world full of accepting, kind, and honorable people. I want all children to believe in themselves and love who they are. And I believe in the power of words. When we speak with our children about difficult topics, we are opening up the conversations that will make this world a better place,” said Lauren.

The pandemic has prevented Lauren from speaking at schools, so she’s now offering virtual school visits to help children grow in their social-emotional learning. More information can be found at https://www.thebebooks.com/.

VideoTile Launches Online NVQ Training Courses in Response To Covid-19

VideoTile Learning has introduced a range of interactive, video-based, online training courses suitable for NVQ qualifications in construction, plant and engineering, along with courses to help candidates gain their CSCS Green Card.

The courses have been produced in response to Covid-19, specifically for use by training companies which had previously offered only face-to-face training.

These courses cover mandatory modules at various levels, and VideoTile has plans to produce similar online training for all NVQs.

Andy Hines, managing director, VideoTile Learning, says, ‘These new courses are mapped against government official learning standards. They’re easy to understand, and make the delivery of the written theory parts of the NVQs more efficient for the centres and more engaging for the candidates.’

‘There has been significant demand for these courses, as learning centres and colleges realise they can’t continue teaching in the way they did before the pandemic.’

‘I looked through the modules, and they’re great!’ says Cohan Tyler, managing director, CST Training. ‘I really feel these will aid candidates’ knowledge questions and, potentially, save us a lot of time.’

One of the most popular courses is ‘Online Level 1 Health and Safety in a Construction Environment’ which enables people to apply for a CSCS Green Card which is needed to work on construction sites.

As Andy explains, ‘We provide access to our online invigilated examination which can be taken anywhere. The final assessment is delivered direct to the candidate via the internet, invigilated using screen-sharing and a webcam, so candidates receive their Green Card quicker and easier, without the stress and hassle of visiting an exam centre.’

The VideoTile system tracks the learner journey online and allows candidates to review the learning materials as often as needed until they are ready to answer the questions.

‘Though we’ve produced these courses in response to Covid-19, we’re confident people will continue to use them when the pandemic is over,’ says Andy. ‘Even if the centres and colleges return to classroom training, they can still deliver the mandatory parts of the courses using our solution.’

Artificial Intelligence Startup Labelbox Closes $40 Million in Series C Funding

Labelbox, the leading training data platform for enterprise machine learning applications, today announced the close of a $40 million Series C funding led by B Capital Group. Previous investors Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, Gradient Ventures (Google’s AI venture fund) and Kleiner Perkins also participated in addition to Catherine Wood, CEO and founder of ARK Invest. To date, Labelbox has raised $79 million in venture funding.

“We give ML teams a complete workflow that organizes and manages data, people and processes to drive competitive business advantage for companies in every major enterprise vertical,” said Manu Sharma, Labelbox’s CEO and co-founder. “Our software platform creates the best collaboration possible between automation and human expertise. We understand that our customer’s success depends on speed. Faster iteration loops via automation is the engine powering improved performance in AI.”

Labelbox offers a software platform to manage, annotate and iterate training data, the most important intellectual property of the artificial intelligence age. Data labeling is a 4 billion dollar market that is expected to nearly quadruple in the next four years. With algorithms available for free and computing resources increasingly commoditized, high-quality labeled training data is the most valuable asset for enterprises adopting supervised learning solutions.

“Data has become the most valuable asset a company can possess, regardless of industry, and machine learning is emerging as the key enabler for digital transformation by leveraging data insights. However, most enterprises that adopt machine learning spend over 80% of their time in data labeling and data management,” said Rashmi Gopinath, General Partner at B Capital Group.

“Labelbox’s training data platform supports many of the Fortune 500 enterprises and federal agencies with an unparalleled set of tools to unlock the full potential of machine learning and deploy accurate models that are constantly improving to help drive better business outcomes,” Gopinath continued. “We’re excited to partner with Manu and Brian and the entire Labelbox team to build a category leader in machine learning data infrastructure and enable enterprises to realize meaningful ROI from their AI/ML investments.”

To build real-world applications, machine learning teams need robust infrastructure that is able to import raw data into labeling workflows, allowing enterprises to manage widely distributed annotation teams, monitor quality, adjust for bias, and export high-quality labeled training data to machine-learning models.

Labelbox functions like a command center for enterprise data. It automates the process with a pre-labeling web-based platform so that enterprises can connect and collaborate easily across databases, BPOs and labeling services regardless of time zone or geography. Labelbox customers report accelerating iteration cycles by up to 800 percent using the platform and cutting development time in half in pushing new models into production.

“Labelbox software provides the advanced annotation capabilities that our teams need for our diverse AI projects. The platform facilitates collaboration and management of multiple distributed labeling workforces, and the integration between our internal processes and the Labelbox platform is easy and works like a charm,” noted Andres Pretio-Moreno, Director, Corporate Technology Advanced Projects at FLIR. “We look forward to continuing to roll out the software across more enterprise initiatives.”

Labelbox is currently being used by industries as diverse as agriculture, insurance, healthcare, media, and military intelligence with customers that include Genentech, Warner Brothers, Bayer, and BASF.

About Labelbox

Founded in 2018 and based in San Francisco, Labelbox is the world’s leading training data platform for machine learning applications. Rather than requiring companies to build their own expensive and incomplete homegrown tools, Labelbox created the world’s first collaborative training data platform that acts as a command center for data science teams to interface with dispersed annotation teams. Better ways to input and manage data leads to higher quality training data, more accurate machine-learning models and faster iterations to improve the algorithms that drive business growth. Labelbox has raised $79 million in capital from leading venture capital firms in Silicon Valley, including Andreessen Horowitz, B Capital Group, Gradient (Google’s AI venture firm), Kleiner Perkins and more.
