VVC Teams Work on End-to-End Film-Grain Management for Today’s Diverse Digital Video Environment

Technology teams associated with the Versatile Video Coding (VVC) community are working on new ways to optimize the efficacy of film grain to accomplish creative objectives and overcome technical limitations in today’s diverse digital video environment, according to Sean McCarthy, director of video strategy & standards at Dolby Laboratories and Philippe de Lagrange, senior engineer at InterDigital in a recent interview for journalists.

Dolby and InterDigital are active participants in the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF), exploring ways VVC can improve the entertainment technology sector’s ability to enhance and preserve artistic intent while delivering the most compelling visual experiences to broadcast and streaming audiences.

Among the first creative concerns expressed in the early transition from celluloid to digital video was the potential loss of film grain, the random physical textures made by small metallic silver particles common in processed analog photography. While the earliest film pioneers considered film grain a technical flaw that detracted from the clarity and sharpness of the image, it did not take long for some of the greatest storytellers in history to turn this visual “noise” into a creative asset.

Filmmakers like Stanley Kubrick and Martin Scorsese often embraced the grainy look of film to create mood and atmosphere in their productions. Translating this capability into the digital realm has been challenging.

“Film grain is difficult to compress using standard algorithmic methodologies,” explains Lagrange. “Video compression relies on temporal and spatial consistency to predict and compress pixels. However, film grain is a random and high-entropy signal that lacks spatial and temporal consistency, making it difficult to compress.”

To this end, Lagrange has been working on a film grain modeling technique that addresses this challenge by compressing video without the grain and then using parameters of a statistical model to synthesize replacement grain during decoding.

“The goal is to preserve the appearance of grain in the compressed video,” he says.

Film Grain Management Addresses Creative and Technical Issues

According to McCarthy, there is more to film grain than achieving excellent creative outcomes.

“Film grain is used in the digital imaging world for two main reasons. Firstly, it provides a perceived sharpness to the image, enhancing the underlying visual experience,” he says.

This subjective sharpness cannot be measured but is beneficial for creating a more natural and less synthetic image.

“Secondly, film grain can hide underlying artifacts — such as compression or image processing flaws — especially in low-bitrate situations. Adding film grain to the imagery can mask these artifacts and improve the overall subjective quality of the image by about 20 to 25%,” says McCarthy.

McCarthy explains that film grain analysis, distribution, and synthesis are all part of managing film grain in digital imaging environments. The analysis involves parameterizing the film grain, while the distribution includes sending metadata — specifically supplemental enhancement information (SEI) messages — containing film grain information.

“The synthesis is the step where the film grain is recreated and added to the imagery during the rendering process. This end-to-end digital management of film grain has improved a lot recently thanks to the work of many experts in content creation, distribution, and consumption. It enables film grain characterizations — or models — to be included as metadata, maintaining creative intent and hiding blemishes caused by bitrate inconsistencies,” says McCarthy.

According to Lagrange, VVC offers a path to better modeling and more cost-efficient deployment of film grain management. Moreover, the SEI message that conveys film grain characteristics for VVC provides the same quality and efficiency boosts when used with other MPEG video compression technologies such as AVC and HEVC.

During the DVB World Conference in March, Lagrange and his team showcased two film grain-related technologies.

●      The first demo exhibited a parameter tuning tool that allows users to adjust the strengths and sharpness of the grain in real time on a test picture.

●      The second demo featured real-time video decoding with grain synthesis.

“We are working on accelerating a hardware implementation of these tools to provide the community with a cost-efficient and technically effective end-to-end way to manage film grain for high-value content that is streamed or broadcast to devices — including content that is protected with digital rights management (DRM) technology,” concludes Lagrange.

Maxon Congratulates 2024 Visual Effects Oscars Nominees

Celebrating exceptional VFX artists for 2024 Academy Awards.

Maxon, developers of professional software solutions for editors, filmmakers, motion designers, visual effects artists, and creators of all types, congratulates all the VFX artistic teams shortlisted and nominated for the 96TH ACADEMY AWARDS®. This achievement recognizes the dedication and hard work of the visual effects teams in creating engaging stories and unforgettable experiences for moviegoers.

“Enthusiasm for the craft of visual effects is palpable in the nominations for this year’s Oscars. The creativity and dedication of the talented individuals and teams nominated is truly inspiring,” says Maxon CEO, David McGavran. “It brings immense pride to our company that tools from Maxon have played a part in these masterpieces. We endeavor to create a space for artists to push the boundaries of what is possible in visual storytelling, and it is rewarding to see that continue to happen year after year. The magic created on screen in these films is nothing short of extraordinary.”

Some of the 2024 Oscar-nominated and shortlisted films that used tools from the Maxon One Suite include:

SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE – Best Animated Feature Film

Long time ZBrush user and modeling supervisor at Sony Pictures ImageworksTerry Park, led the modeling team in the creation of every object, character and set, forming the foundation of each shot in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The use of ZBrush facilitated an interactive work process between designers, making character design faster and more efficient. As a result, the team achieved a record-breaking feat of the creation of over 200 characters, the highest number of unique characters in a single animated film. These numerous detailed character designs crafted in ZBrush were key in creating scenes like the rooftop barbecue party, where a bustling crowd added depth and energy and helped to immerse viewers in the vibrant world of Spider-Man.

“ZBrush gives us freehand so that we can sculpt easily and quickly without dealing with any technical limitations,” says Park. He adds, on the importance of being able to create the record-breaking number of unique characters, “it didn’t just add natural realism of diversity into the film, it also brought the joy of looking and finding all the different characters in the film.”

GODZILLA MINUS ONE – Best Visual Effects

In the production of Godzilla Minus One, director Takashi Yamazaki and modeler Kousuke Taguchi employed Maxon’s ZBrush to bring Godzilla to life, drawing inspiration from previous iterations while adding new elements to suit the latest narrative. ZBrush’s versatile tools played a crucial role in shaping the monster’s appearance, with Yamazaki creating a rough 3D maquette in ZBrush before Taguchi refined the details and balanced the model. Taguchi highlighted the use of Sculptris Pro for film models alongside a set of essential ZBrush brushes for detailing. Through innovative tools like ZBrush, Godzilla Minus One represents the pinnacle of creature creation in modern cinema.

LETTER TO A PIG – Best Animated Short

The Oscar-nominated short Letter To a Pig, produced by The Hive Studio, captivated audiences with its powerful storytelling and stunning visual effects. VFX artist Shahar Davis played a crucial role in its creation, particularly in visually representing the film’s fragmented memories and theme of transformation. Using Maxon tools including Misfire and other Red Giant Universe plugins, Davis achieved a cohesive and grungy visual language, manipulating background layers to mirror the shifting narrative of the Holocaust taught in Israeli high schools. Davis emphasized the challenge of blending diverse source materials to create a cinematic image, highlighting the importance of tools like Red Giant in adding grunge, balanced looks, fading effects and simulated backlight effects to enhance the film’s aesthetic.

Additional notable mentions include Mammal Studios who utilized Maxon’s Redshift for CG rendering in the shortlisted film, Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire.

Bronze sculpture by Henry Moore (British, 1898-1986) will headline Shannon’s Fall Fine Art Auction, Thursday, October 28

The 180-lot auction is packed with 20th century American art, 19th century European art, Hudson River School painting and Modernism and Contemporary art.

Shannon’s has collected an exceptional group of 180 artworks to be offered in their Fall Fine Art Auction on Thursday, October 28th, beginning promptly at 6 pm Eastern time. There are spectacular offerings in every category, particularly 20th century American art, 19th century European art, Hudson River School painting, Modernism and Contemporary art.
Headlining the auction are two works by celebrated the British Modernist, Henry Moore. Moore, best known as a sculptor, was a skilled draughtsman often working out concepts for his sculptures on paper. Shannon’s will offer both a bronze, Mother and Child on Ladderback Rocking Chair (estimated at $400,000-$600,000) and a colored, mixed-media work on paper, titled Rocking Chairs (estimate $100,000-$200,000) related to the series of mother and child sculptures on rocking bases.
The bronze, from an edition of 9, was intended to rock back and forth, adding charm and playfulness to the warm subject matter. It was purchased directly from Moore’s New York City dealer in 1952. The drawing, created in 1948, illustrates Moore’s various approaches to the mother and child theme. Although the work is a study on paper, Moore clearly conceived of his works as volumetric sculptures, drawing shadows and motion into his designs.

A large, 80 inch by 150 inch painting by the Chilean artist Roberto Matta carries a pre-sale estimate of $150,000-$250,000. The untitled painting presents an alternative, futuristic, dreamlike universe with hypersexualized, androgynous humanoid figures typical of his paintings from mid-century. Other highlights in Modern and Contemporary include a monochromatic abstract painting by Russian artist Serge Poliakoff, a bright, expressive watercolor by Paul Jenkins and two works from the estate of Gerome Kamrowski.
Two superb works on paper by Charles Burchfield lead the offerings of 20th century American art. January Sun, measuring an impressive 40 inches by 34 inches, depicts a view in Buffalo outside the artist’s home and studio. Burchfield started the composition in 1947 and finished it in 1957. Estimated at $150,000-$250,000 this market-fresh watercolor has been in a private collection for nearly 50 years and is in excellent original condition. From the same collection, another Burchfield, titled Lincoln Avenue at Salem, Main Street, is expected to bring $70,000-$90,000. Dated 1916, the work illustrates a scene from Burchfield’s native Ohio during an early period in his career. Loosely associated with the Regionalist artists, Burchfield found inspiration in his immediate surroundings.
From the same collection a rare Thomas Hart Benton oil study, Study for Sugar Cane, will be offered with an expected selling price of $200,000-$300,000. The oil sketch reads much larger than its size, and is almost identical to the larger, finished composition now in the collection of the Thomas Hart Benton Trust.
Other highlights in American art include a snowy view of the financial district by Guy C. Wiggins (estimate $100,000-$150,000); a Luminist vista of the Susquehanna River by John F. Cropsey (estimate $80,000-$120,000); a large view of Niagara Falls by Hermann Herzog (estimate $40,000-$60,000); a portrait of a woman by Charles Courtney Curran (estimate $40,000-$60,000); a large forest interior by Worthington Whittredge (estimate $40,000-$60,000); a masterpiece-quality work by Felicie Waldo Howell (estimate $30,000-$50,000); and a portfolio of 96 watercolors by Fidelia Bridges (estimate $30,000-$50,000).
European paintings include a portrait of the opera character Musette from Puccini’s La Boheme by Italian Academic artist Eugene von Blaas, estimated at $100,000-$150,000; and a portrait of a wealthy Viennese banker by Isidor Kaufmann, estimated at $100,000-$150,000.
To view the full catalog, condition reports and to bid live online, visit www.shannons.com. Previews will be held by appointment only, October 18th-27th, weekdays from 11 am to 6 pm Eastern time, and Saturday, October 23rd from 10-3. Virtual previews and additional photos are available by request.
Bidding is available by telephone, absentee or live on shannons.com. A live-stream of the auction will be broadcast on shannons.com. Albert Boufarah is Featured in a Forthcoming Professional Profile

During the course of the profile, the founder and chief executive of computer recycling firm SAMR Inc. deals with a wide variety of subjects, including how the idea for an electronics recycling firm occurred to him and what motivates him to keep expanding his business.

When a web-based journalist approached Albert Boufarah, the founder and CEO of electronic waste (e-waste) recycling firm SAMR Inc., about being featured in an in-depth professional profile, he agreed readily, eager to share his accumulated wisdom with the world. The profile, which was conducted on behalf of a noted online periodical aimed at tech-savvy businesspeople and entrepreneurs, is scheduled to be published in the coming days.

Early on in the piece, Albert is asked what prompted the thought of starting an e-waste & laptop recycling company in the first place. “As I learned more and more about the recycling process, I couldn’t help but notice one or two overarching themes at play in the industry at the time. The first was that beginning in the last decades of the 20th century, companies, organizations, and individuals were throwing away an increasingly large amount of electronic equipment. My interest was piqued by this development, and so I dug in and did some research,” he explains, elaborating, “I found out that not only are many of the key components of electronic devices toxic if left to erode in a normal landfill, but also that a good deal of them are made from rare metals. That’s when I had the ‘eureka’ moment that establishing a company that responsibly disposed of these potentially dangerous items could simultaneously benefit the environment and make for a successful business. It was at that moment that SAMR Inc. came to fruition.”

Later on in the interview, upon being asked what motivates him to keep growing his business, Albert Boufarah responds that professional & personal factors are the driving forces in his life. “Simply put, it’s my children. I love them both so much, and I resolved a long time ago to do whatever was in my power to make the world they inherit a better place,” he responds in a moment of true candor, before widening the scope of his answer. “Although, if I’m being really honest, it’s about more than that. Sure, I think of my children first-any father would-but, ultimately, it’s really about everyone’s children. It’s about the future of the human race and the planet Earth. I think that broadening the reach of SAMR Inc. contributes to the sustainability of society. The more material our company recycles, the better shape the planet will be in for future generations.”

Anyone curious to learn more about Albert Boufarah’s professional endeavors & goal of helping the environment is encouraged to visit his personal website, while anyone interested to learn more about SAMR Inc. and the many services it provides is encouraged to visit the company’s official website.

About Albert Boufarah:

Originally from Freehold, NJ, Albert Boufarah is a veteran businessman & a self-professed “serial entrepreneur”. He started his first two companies in early adulthood, one dealing with traditional waste management and the other dealing with tree and yard waste disposal. With the success of these two companies, Albert Boufarah established himself as a force to be reckoned with in New Jersey’s highly-competitive waste disposal industry.

Later, as he became more educated and concerned with climate change and other environmental issues, Albert turned his efforts toward finding eco-friendly solutions to waste management. As the millennium dawned, Albert established SAMR Inc. in order to realize his ambition of an industrial-scale, environmentally sustainable electronics recycling company and do his part to assist with the rehabilitation of the planet. In the years since, SAMR Inc. has surpassed his expectations in the realms of positive ecological and social impact, as well as expansion and profitability. Although he wears many hats professionally, Albert Boufarah views his position as the CEO of SAMR Inc. as his primary role.

About SAMR Inc.:

SAMR Inc. is one of the world’s premier electronics recycling companies. It provides solutions for businesses, schools, hospitals, towns, and government entities looking to dispose of e-waste. The professional services that SAMR Inc. offers range from e-waste & TV recycling to secure data destruction to information technology asset management. With more than twenty years experience and a state-of-the-art recycling facility located on premises, SAMR Inc. is one of only a handful of companies that can legally collect, demanufacture, and safely recycle computers and computer components. SAMR Inc. is headquartered in Lakewood, New Jersey, and services most of the Eastern United States.

Seven Arts Entertainment Inc. (OTC PINK: SAPX), the “Company”, is pleased to provide updates on its Muse Media subsidiary.

Muse Media has recently launched a new website: www.musemediaent.com

As stated on its site, Muse Media is an Atlanta, Georgia based multimedia and entertainment company that offers label services and produces compelling original content for streaming distribution. Muse Media has developed a completely new outlook for the future of developing media and plans to revitalize a dying industry with an innovative approach to producing music, videos, and movies as well as redefining distribution, promotion, and access to content.

Muse will be primarily managed under the direction of Matt Bryant. Matt Bryant entered the film industry in 2016 producing a television pilot for the nationally aired television show “Rocklanta.” Matt has worked on a number of music videos, commercials, and social media ads for top music artists, as well as 3 award-winning short films, including “No Ringo” which was an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Company currently foresees Muse operating in several capacities. First, Muse will act as the Atlanta satellite of Seven Arts, allowing the company to coordinate seamlessly between Hollywood and the burgeoning Atlanta market for various production demands. Secondly, Muse will serve as a lower-tier development arm for “indie” style production concepts, music “A&R”, and test marketing. Film and music productions showing the most promise will then be advanced for further investment under Seven Arts. Finally, Muse will spearhead all social media initiatives. Hosting music videos, film promotions and podcasts through platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and others.

Stated Seven Arts’ CEO, Jason Black: “I’m very pleased with the progress Muse has made in a short time. We envision Muse as being very disruptive to the way film and music have been developed traditionally and establishing a new paradigm for a world that is in constant demand for fresh content.”
