San Francisco Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Usha Rajagopal, Gives Newfound Confidence to Clients Undergoing FTM Surgery

Using advanced laser technology, Dr. Usha Rajagopal helps boost confidence through the reduction of scarring due to surgeries, stretch marks, and a variety of skin conditions

San Francisco Plastic Surgery & Laser Center, a premier provider of plastic surgery services in the Bay Area for over 20 years, is giving clients renewed confidence with its powerful VBeam Laser technology. The VBeam Laser is effective for clients looking to reduce scarring due to a variety of reasons, but one application with especially promising results is reducing scarring following Female-to-Male (FTM) gender-affirming surgery.

VBeam is one of the center’s most popular laser treatments. The FDA has approved it for use in over 20 medical indications, including post-procedural bruising, inflammatory acne, vascular lesions such as cherry angiomas and hemangiomas, spider veins, telangiectasia (commonly seen in rosacea), scars, stretch marks, port wine stains, and more.

The laser works by delivering a concentrated beam of light targeting oxyhemoglobin contained within blood vessels, vascular lesions, scars, and more. This light is then converted to heat, treating the targeted lesions while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.

Dr. Usha Rajagopal, Medical Director, has successfully used the laser to reduce the appearance of scarring in the upper chest area for patients undergoing gender-affirming FTM/N surgery. The removal of breast tissue can lead to extensive scarring. But with VBeam technology, Dr. Rajgopal is helping patients reduce that scarring, leading to better post-surgery outcomes and giving patients an added boost of confidence in their new bodies. The treatments are quick, safe, and effective and require no anesthesia.

“Every body is different, and the ways our scars heal are very different, too. For those who may be left with noticeable or unsightly scars, the effects on their confidence can be devastating,” said Dr. Rajgopal. “The VBeam laser is an effective solution to reduce the appearance of scarring in a number of instances, including FTM chest surgery, which leaves a long scar across the chest. With targeted VBeam treatment, we are helping patients enhance the look of their bodies and regain their confidence with the reduction of unsightly scarring.”

Turning Precision Medicine into Action in Immuno-Oncology, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

In this free webinar, the featured speakers will discuss the benefits of ICH and flow cytometry in oncology drug development and how NGS testing for patient diagnostics is building databases for researchers. Attendees will learn how central and specialty laboratories can combine their efforts to meet the needs of immuno-oncology drug developers.

The challenges in immuno-oncology drug development require deep scientific insights, generation and analysis of complex biological data, new state-of-the art technologies and both logistical & operational support across continents. The goal of immuno-oncology drug developers is to turn precision medicine into action, bringing life-changing therapies to patients.

Immuno-oncology clinical trials have very low success rates, with just 5.3 percent of all drugs seeking an oncology indication eventually receiving approval. In the path to precision medicines, the use of molecular markers and protein biomarkers in both early- and late-stage immuno-oncology trials has become an increasingly important way to optimize patient selection, perform safety monitoring and measure drug efficacy at the tumor level. Immunohistochemistry (IHC), flow cytometry and next-generation sequencing (NGS) are complementary technologies that, together, offer comprehensive biological insights essential for immuno-oncology clinical trials.

Register for this webinar to learn why these technologies are essential to improve the odds of success in oncology drug development and how to find a central lab capable of developing customized assays with standardized SOPs across sites.

Join expert speakers from Cerba Research, Jérôme Sallette, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer, Cerba Healthcare; Sofie Vandevyver, Ph.D., Head of Business Operating and Marketing; Renaud Burrer, Ph.D., Head of Histopathology; and Nithianandan Selliah, Ph.D., Global Head of Flow Cytometry, as well as expert speakers from ACT Genomics, Shu Jen Chen, Ph.D., Chief Scientific Officer and George Wei, Ph.D., Vice President, R&D Division, in a live webinar with two broadcast dates on Monday, October 4, 2021 at 10am EDT (3pm BST/UK) and Tuesday, October 5, 2021 at 10am CST (China).

Dr. Carlos Barba Collaborates on the Second of Three New Articles

The bariatric and general surgeon acted as an expert consultant on the second in a trilogy of informative new articles about issues surrounding bariatric surgery.

It is with much pride and pleasure that bariatric and general surgeon Dr. Carlos Barba of Brownsville, Texas announces that he has lent his medical expertise to the second of three new articles about important issues surrounding weight loss surgery. The article, which is entitled Failed Weight Loss Surgery? Dr. Carlos A. Barba Explains Potential Issues Derailing Bariatric Surgery Success, was published on August 9, 2021, and was written in conjunction with an online periodical that runs news and opinion pieces from all around the United States.

At the outset of the article, Dr. Barba does not mince words about the primary reason that some bariatric surgeries do not provide lasting results. “One of the main reasons weight loss surgery fails to be effective is the regression to previous lifestyle choices,” he writes, going to explain that patients undergoing such surgeries are given explicit instructions about food intake, exercise, and personal mindset with relation to their body image. “For weight loss surgery to be successful and for results to last, the individual must also have a personal lifestyle change. Gradual poor choices compound over time, leading to weight gain compared to one’s pre-surgery condition.”

Later on in the piece, Dr. Carlos Barba delves deeper into standard post-operation instructions given to patients of bariatric surgery, explaining, “After weight loss operation procedures, internal organs are still healing and may need time to get used to processing foods and performing daily functions.” He then proceeds to outline how not abiding by doctor’s orders regarding eating slowly and mindfully, avoiding certain foods, and drinking in between meals can be medically dangerous for patients, as well as causing them to regain unwanted weight.

The full text of the article can be found here.

For those curious to learn more about Dr. Carlos Barba, his blog posts, press clippings, and a host of other multimedia content relating to his career can be found on his personal website. Anyone interested in booking an appointment to consult with Dr. Barba regarding medical issues or to read news and updates relating to his practice are encouraged to visit his professional website.

About Dr. Carlos Barba:

Dr. Carlos Barba is a bariatric and general surgeon with medical practices in the towns of Brownsville and Harlingen, Texas. After graduating from the University of Montreal and the University of Pennsylvania, he finished his medical training by completing a fellowship in trauma and critical care. Upon moving to Hartford, Connecticut, Dr. Barba began performing bariatric surgery due to the high demand for it in the area coupled with the lack of local qualified surgeons in that specialty. He quickly became a member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons (ASMBS), and in 2005, became involved in creating Connecticut’s first ASMBS Center of Excellence. When Dr. Barba relocated to Texas in 2013, he created the first ASMBS Center of Excellence in the Rio Grande Valley, located in Cameron Country. To garner this designation, both the surgeon and the medical center in question have to meet the highest standards for patient care. These days, Dr. Carlos Barba spends about half his professional time on bariatric surgery and the other half on general surgery.

The Lung Health Foundation Contracts with Cloud DX to Manage Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with Remote Patient Monitoring

Cloud DX (TSXV:CDX), a leading North American provider of virtual care and remote patient monitoring solutions announced today a new partnership with the Lung Health Foundation to supply remote patient monitoring (RPM) kits and services in the Province of Ontario. The Lung Health Foundation intends to deploy Cloud DX Connected Health through Ontario-based hospital partners to improve care for patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

his announcement is the latest in a series of contracts announced by Cloud DX in recent weeks, including a contract extension with a large Canadian provincial health authority, a partnership agreement with US-based Maxwell Telecare and a virtual clinic deployment in Newfoundland.

According to Canadian Institute of Health Information, over 23,000 Ontarians are admitted to hospital every year for COPD. Each hospital stay lasts an average of 5.6 days at an average cost to the province of $6,200 per visit or $142 million per year, making COPD exacerbation one of the largest healthcare costs in Ontario.

Cloud DX’s remote patient monitoring platform is used by healthcare providers to improve COPD patient outcomes, with deployments at Markham Stouffville Hospital, Hamilton Health Sciences and Kingston Health Sciences Centre among others. Remote monitoring by Cloud DX helps clinicians detect symptoms of COPD exacerbation earlier, and trigger pre-approved action plans to guide COPD patients to take immediate steps to alleviate their symptoms, reducing ER visits and hospitalizations. The result is better healthcare outcomes for patients and lower COPD hospital costs.

This 12-month contract can be renewed by Lung Health or any of the participating healthcare partners at the completion of the initial term. Cloud DX charges upfront for Connected Health Kits that are prescribed to patients for use at home, and then charges a per patient per month fee for software, services and support as each patient enrolls in the Connected Health system. In this case, all fees are paid by Lung Health.

“The COVID-19 pandemic underscored the vulnerability of individuals with COPD. Remote patient monitoring has been shown to be beneficial in helping predict exacerbations while providing patients with critical information required to manage their own condition. Early intervention and better disease management improves quality of life and lowers healthcare resource utilization. Private-public partnerships such as the one between our two organizations are key to getting at the core of some of the healthcare challenges we’ve long been facing,” says Peter Glazier, Executive Vice President of the Lung Health Foundation.

“Cloud DX Connected Health has been shown to be a powerful tool to mitigate the impact of COPD, improving the lives of patients while at the same time streamlining provider workflows. We’re proud to be a partner with the Lung Health Foundation to expand the number of Ontarians that have access to this life-changing technology,” stated Cloud DX CEO Robert Kaul.

About the Lung Health Foundation

The Lung Health Foundation is the leading Canadian health charity dedicated to improving lung health through a uniquely integrated approach that identifies gaps and fills them through investments in ground-breaking research and urgently needed programs and supports, policy and practice change, and promoting awareness about lung health issues affecting all Canadians.

About Cloud DX

Accelerating virtual healthcare’s future, Cloud DX is making healthcare better for everyone. The company’s Connected Health remote patient monitoring platform is used by healthcare enterprises and care teams across North America to virtually manage chronic disease, enable ageing in place and deliver hospital-quality post-surgical care. Providers partnering with Cloud DX achieve better healthcare and patient outcomes, reduce the need for hospitalization/re-hospitalization and reduce the costs of healthcare delivery through more efficient use of resources. Cloud DX is the co-winner of the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, a 2021 Edison Award winner, a Fast Company “World Changing Idea” finalist and one of “Canada’s Ten Most Prominent Telehealth Providers.”

DiaspoCare is Providing Peace of Mind For The Health of Your Loved Ones With its Healthcare Inclusion Platform

Serge-Alain Wandji is the CEO and Co-Founder of DiaspoCare.com , a startup whose mission is to increase healthcare inclusion in developing countries. The mobile platform provides new opportunities to connect the African Diaspora to pharmacists and clinicians back home while also giving African sponsors in the Western Hemisphere the opportunity to deliver quality healthcare to their loved ones.

Whether separated by thousands of miles or living in another city, DiaspoCare’s healthcare financing services give families peace of mind that their funds deliver quality healthcare for their loved ones. The platform works through partnerships with healthcare providers, like pharmacies, where medical expenses are channeled directly to the service providers in their home country while tracking transactions and protecting privacy.

“I was born and raised in Cameroon, Africa. My parents depleted their savings to send me to college in North America when I was 18 years old. I settled my due with my father by completing a PhD, postdoctoral work in biomedical research and a Master’s degree in management of technology. However, like many African immigrants know, you settle your dues with your mother by helping others. We started DiaspoCare seven years ago because, as African immigrants, we have a strong moral obligation to help our loved ones back home. When you look at healthcare in many developing countries, 12 of the most prescribed medicines cost 5-50x the international price. Low-income earners often spend 93% of their income on housing, food, transportation and utilities, leaving only 7% for medicines. It would take them as much as 14-days wage to afford one course of some essential medicines. So, it’s not surprising that the lack of affordability leaves two-thirds of the people living in Africa out of the healthcare system,” explains CEO and Co-Founder of DiaspoCare, Serge-Alain Wandji.

He goes on to say, “The African diaspora takes its social obligations seriously and, as reported by the World Bank in 2019, transferred around $48Bn to their families in home countries to help with healthcare, food, utility bills, and other expenses. The problem is that healthcare funds are frequently diverted to other uses and not enough medicine is bought, if any at all.

When we created this platform, we wanted to find a way to unbundle the portion of remittances meant for healthcare and send it directly to a network of trusted pharmacies and clinics while also ensuring the delivery of quality medication and healthcare services to family members and loved ones. In the past, without knowing the cost of medicines, we would take a guess and send say, $50-$100 when solicited by a family member. Given the number of relatives who depend on us, it can be quite a lot of money. By providing price transparency and enabling micro-payments directly to pharmacies, DiaspoCare makes it practical to cover even your remote relative’s $2 malaria prescription. Also, our transaction fees are less than 3% and we are working toward completely eliminating them. So we stretch every healthcare dollar invested on our platform to touch many more lives. These efforts are significant steps towards healthcare inclusion.

Register as a sponsor on our mobile app. When your family needs medication or clinical services, all you need to do is make the payment from the app directly to the Pharmacy or Clinic and your loved ones will be taken care of.”

The DiaspoCare system is not only helping families, but it’s also helping Pharmacists earn new revenues from global customers. “Naturally, when we came to pharmacists with the idea, they loved it. Before we even built our platform, they were signing up for our program.”

“DiaspoCare is an opportunity for us to not only finance healthcare for many people who can’t afford it but also to ensure they actually get quality medicines.”

The DiaspoCare project is deployed in Kenya and Ghana, and piloting in Nigeria and Cote-d’Ivoire, with 240 pharmacies. Some partners include GoodLife Pharmacy, which is private-equity funded and the largest pharmacy chain in Kenya, two major hospitals, Jubilee Health Insurance, the largest health insurance company in East Africa and Ecobank, the largest bank in Africa. The venture is led by a brilliant team of highly skilled professionals who have a strong moral and social obligation to help their loved ones back home with their healthcare needs. Americans Hunt for Certified Canadian Online Pharmacies to Avoid Rogue Pharmacies

It’s always important to make an informed decision where you get your medication. While convenient, many online pharmacies are considered “Rogue pharmacies” that may not provide safe and effective medication.

Your Canada Drug Store has 20 years of combined experience in the online pharmacy industry. They work hard to ensure that safe and effective medication can be affordable for the people that need it. They provide these tips to ensure that you are working with a legitimate and trustworthy online pharmacy.

1: Make sure it approved by CIPA and Pharmacychecker

Objective Third-party organizations are important to ensure you’re getting objective information about companies. CIPA and pharmacy checkers monitor online pharmacies to ensure that they comply with all the rules and regulations of the industry. A seal of approval by BOTH of these companies will ensure that you are working with a quality website.

2: Never order from a pharmacy that does not require a prescription.

Selling prescription drugs without a medical prescription is illegal. While it is sometimes difficult or costly to see a doctor, it is a prerequisite to find a legitimate source of the medication. If an online pharmacy is willing to send a medication without the proper documents, they will likely not follow safety guidelines or send a quality product.

While it may be tempting to take the easy route, your pharmacy should do its best to protect your health. If a website follows the proper guidelines of an online pharmacy, that is a good sign they are trustworthy.

3: Check that the website has encryption technology to protect your information.

While this may not be obvious to most people, website security should be a major concern. You likely need to provide personal, medical, and financial information to the website. While there are indications on the URL, they should provide their web severity credentials prominently on the front page. SSL encryption is the standard. You should also check the website’s privacy policy to ensure that they specify their personal information policy.

4: Ensure they have a pharmacist available for counseling

While many individuals are well educated on how to take their medicine, always check to make sure you can speak to a pharmacist when necessary. Online pharmacies have an obligation to ensure patients can use their medication properly and are cognizant of any potential risks. A website that will offer a medication without a licensed pharmacist on staff is likely willing to compromise your health.

5: Only order from a website that indicates where the medicine comes from

Most online pharmacies offer medication from around the world. Some individuals have preferences on where their medication comes from. Products from Canada and the U.K are often preferred even if they cost more.

There can be affordable and safe options from India and Turkey. Even if you do not have a specific preference in favor of the best prices, make sure that you are at least aware of where your products are dispensed from.

Pharmacies that are not transparent about this may be sourcing counterfeit medication from other countries. When an online pharmacy includes the country of origin, it confirms they have a relationship with that pharmacy and they are a reliable source of medication.

A website that does not properly evaluate its dispensing pharmacy partners may get their medicine from regulated supply chains. It may not be safe or effective.

6: Look at the reviews online

Customer reviews are a prediction of your potential experience with those companies. Everyone’s opinion should matter.

Companies that do not have a third-party review service may be trying to hide something. A successful and customer-focused Prescription drugs company should have mostly 5-staMedia Contactr reviews. People provide reviews of their own volition and as long as an objective third party service is hosting the review, they can work to inform you if people are happy using a service.

7: Make sure they guarantee their products

Even if you have taken painstaking care in choosing an online pharmacy, sometimes mistakes can happen. Occasionally things may get lost in the mail, or someone may make a mistake. When these things happen, the pharmacy should have a robust return policy or money-back guarantee. Online pharmacies that do not have a return guarantee do not trust their products and will not assist you when something happens that is out of your control. You should not take a risk when you order medicine online. Always review the website’s return policy to ensure they are reliable.

Finding a pharmacy that is genuinely concerned about your safety and well-being. According to the CDC, 1 in 10 Americans needs to ration their medicine and skip doses due to high drug costs. Once you have established a relationship with a professional online pharmacy, it should help manage your therapeutic drug plan.

Medicaid Expansion: How We Bounce Back

This week, Wisconsin’s budget committee voted – yet again – to turn down the opportunity to expand the state’s Medicaid program, thereby eliminating the opportunity to provide health care and long-term care services for more Wisconsinites and declining more than $1.6 billion in federal funding. The $1.6 billion in new federal resources is the best way to bolster our health system and help Wisconsin bounce back by investing in the people of our state, their businesses, their families, their health care providers, and their health.

People across Wisconsin need the health care, nursing home care, home care, and more that the Medicaid program provides. And as taxpayers, they deserve to have their fair share of federal tax dollars returned to Wisconsin to pay for these important services. A total of 38 states have adopted Medicaid expansion, plus Washington, D.C. We are one of only 12 states that has not. By staying on the sidelines, we are all losing out on significant resources.

By moving ahead to expand Medicaid, we will see real impact on real lives.

Melissa, a small business owner, will feel more secure knowing her employees are able to access affordable health care coverage.

Andy, a Wisconsin resident with cerebral palsy, will get better care because the caregivers who make it possible for him to live and work at home will be able to take on more hours without worrying about going over the income limits and losing their BadgerCare Plus coverage.

Zena, who lives with a chronic illness caused by a norovirus infection, could pick up more hours at work and maintain her BadgerCare Plus coverage, including coverage for the only medication suitable to treat her condition. There is no generic alternative, and this single prescription costs $6,000 each month.

Covering more Wisconsinites and drawing down more federal funds through Medicaid expansion will support our health care and long-term care providers. Wisconsin could increase payment rates to hospitals, doctors, mental health therapists, and nursing homes. As more people gain coverage, providers also have fewer patients for whom no payment is available.

Taking steps to improve the health of low-income families and individuals, and the financial solvency of our health care system, will strengthen our state’s economy and enable us to bounce back faster. And accepting $1.6 billion in federal funding – our fair share of the taxes people have paid, and will continue to pay into the system – will provide Wisconsin the opportunity to make far-reaching investments in our state.

Past legislatures and our past Governor decided not to step up to the plate and make this common-sense change to our state’s Medicaid program. Those short-sighted decisions have left hundreds of millions of our tax dollars in Washington and made it harder for tens of thousands of Wisconsinites to access the health care they and their families need. We can’t turn back the clock and recoup that funding, but we can make a different decision going forward. We can expand Medicaid, improve the health and well-being of our fellow Wisconsinites, invest in our state, and help Wisconsin bounce back.
