Educator Advocates for Nationwide Inmate Voting Rights in New Book

In ‘Talk Show,’ author C. Sharpe examines the timely topic of voter suppression and its long history in the U.S. through the lens of a fictional short story

Following the 2020 election, the topic of voting rights has risen to the forefront of political discussion and debate. In his latest book, author and educator Charlton Sharpe, who writes under the pen name C. Sharpe, sends a simple message – everyone should have the right to vote. In “Talk Show: Inmates Voting a Short Story,” Sharpe lays the groundwork for voting rights to be extended to all Americans incarcerated for nonviolent offences and delves into the insidious history behind denying inmates their voting rights.

“Talk Show” is a short story that unfolds in a screenplay-style format. A radio show host named Ray Thompson interviews his guest, Charles Sharpe, about a fictional Proposition X and takes questions from an eclectic mix of callers. In the story, Proposition X is implied to have been passed in California, reinstating the voting rights of nonviolent incarcerated American citizens in the state.

As Charles takes each caller’s questions, he drives listeners back to the core of the issue, explaining how President Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation did indeed free enslaved people, and the Reconstruction Era saw previously enslaved people soar into political office in the South. But that freedom was short-lived, and the creation of Jim Crow laws swiftly followed. These laws led to disenfranchisement for Black people and People of Color, particularly in the polls where poll taxes and literacy tests were implemented. Laws targeting nonviolent activity, such as “loitering” and “insulting hand gestures,” were also introduced and resulted in the mass incarceration of vulnerable populations.

“After working with inmates as a GED teacher, one day an inmate asked me the question: Why is it that in America, inmates have voting rights in only two states, Maine and Vermont? That question was posed to me over 20 years ago, and I still have not found a justified answer,” Sharpe said. “That query is truly what inspired me to write this book. I would like for readers to be ready to abolish one of the last Jim Crow voting suppression tactics being used today – the strategy of locking up Black and Brown people to take away their voting rights.”

Ultimately, “Talk Show” provides a poignant call to action and educates readers on the disenfranchisement faced by vulnerable voters. Sharpe’s book also raises support for and awareness around the constitutional right to vote for nonviolent offenders.

Mediator Robert Heath Offers Suggestions for Disaster Claims

Mediator Robert Heath Offers Suggestions for Disaster ClaimsMediator Robert Heath Offers Suggestions for Disaster Claims

As the nation moves into windstorm and fire season, mediator Robert Heath has tips for home and business owners to assist with post-disaster insurance claims.

A Fellow of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators and the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals, Heath has mediated thousands of claims, many arising from hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, hail storms, and fires. He says there are things property owners can do before and after the disaster to help with claims.

“I’ve seen many policyholders who are not aware of what their insurance policy covers until after a disaster,” he said. “By then, in many cases, it’s too late. They should review the policy in advance while there is time to make changes, if necessary.”

Heath suggests homeowners document and photograph contents before disaster strikes because many items will be washed or burned away.

Heath is the principal of Robert Heath Mediation based in Pensacola, Florida which provides mediation and arbitration services throughout Florida and the United States. He has been appointed by the Florida Insurance Commissioner to mediate hurricane disaster claims and was an Appeals Panelist for the Deepwater Horizon Economic Loss Settlement, the largest mass settlement in United States history.

In most cases, the exposure to asbestos took place in the 1950′s, 1960′s, 1970′s, or 1980′s. Mesothelioma typically takes three to five decades to develop. www.karstvonoiste.com/

The states with the highest incidence of mesothelioma include Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Maine, New Jersey, West Virginia, Florida, Wyoming, and Washington. However, mesothelioma does happen in Nebraska as the Nebraska Mesothelioma Victims Center would like to explain anytime at 800-714-0303.

Adobe Co-Founder Dr. Geschke Passes at 81

It is with profound sadness that Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) shares the passing of the company’s beloved co-founder, Dr. Charles Geschke. Dr. Geschke passed away on Friday, surrounded by his family.

“I could never have imagined having a better, more likable, or more capable business partner. Not having Chuck in our lives will leave a huge hole and those who knew him will all agree.” Tweet this

Dr. Geschke co-founded Adobe in 1982 with Dr. John Warnock, a colleague from Xerox. Their first product was Adobe PostScript, a pivotal technology that sparked the desktop publishing revolution. Dr. Geschke was chief operating officer of Adobe from December 1986 to July 1994 and president from April 1989 until his retirement in April 2000. He served as chairman of the board with Dr. Warnock from September 1997 to January 2017 and a member of the board until April 2020, when he transitioned to become emeritus board member. In recognition of his technical achievements, Dr. Geschke was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the Computer Entrepreneur Award from the IEEE Computer Society, and the American Electronics Association Medal of Honor.

Dr. Warnock, Adobe co-founder, former CEO and Chairman of the Board, shared the following: “I could never have imagined having a better, more likable, or more capable business partner. Not having Chuck in our lives will leave a huge hole and those who knew him will all agree.”

Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen sent the following email to all Adobe employees:

It is with profound sadness that I share that our beloved co-founder Dr. Chuck Geschke, has passed away at the age of 81, leaving an indelible mark on our company and the world.

This is a huge loss for the entire Adobe community and the technology industry, for whom he has been a guide and hero for decades.

As co-founders of Adobe, Chuck and John Warnock developed groundbreaking software that has revolutionized how people create and communicate. Their first product was Adobe PostScript, an innovative technology that provided a radical new way to print text and images on paper and sparked the desktop publishing revolution. Chuck instilled a relentless drive for innovation in the company, resulting in some of the most transformative software inventions, including the ubiquitous PDF, Acrobat, Illustrator, Premiere Pro and Photoshop.

In recognition of his technical achievements, Chuck was awarded the prestigious National Medal of Technology and Innovation, the Computer Entrepreneur Award from the IEEE Computer Society, and the American Electronics Association Medal of Honor. After 18 years sharing the helm of Adobe, Chuck retired in 2000 and continued to serve on the Board of Directors until last year, when he transitioned to become emeritus board member.

As much as his inventions changed the world, it is his focus on people, purpose and culture that has profoundly impacted each of us at Adobe. As he always said, Chuck wanted to create a company where he would want to work. He believed that good ideas come from everywhere in the company and that it’s not only what we do but how we do it that matters most. He dedicated much of his time and talent to various philanthropies and community organizations throughout his lifetime.

I spoke to John earlier today and he had this to share about their five-decade partnership: “In 1982, Chuck and I agreed that we should leave Xerox and start our own company. That was the beginning of Adobe. I could never have imagined having a better, more likable, or more capable business partner. Not having Chuck in our lives will leave a huge hole and those who knew him will all agree.”

I admired his brilliance, kindness and values that defined his character and am grateful that I had the privilege to know and work with him. His absence will certainly leave a huge hole in my heart.

As I grieve the loss of my long-time role model, mentor and friend, I am comforted knowing that Adobe’s best days are ahead – exactly as Chuck would want them to be.

Shantanu

Nagamasa Global to Take Monthly Indicator of Confidence in Agricultural Economy

The introduction of this new economic indicator underscores the importance of the agricultural economy and its participants – food producers and agribusinesses

Kanto (PRUnderground) February 4th, 2021

Nagamasa Global, a commodity broker that aims to offer the highest level of customer service and transaction capability required by today’s sophisticated financial market participants, today announced that Japan’s Center for Commercial Agriculture (JCCA) and the Nagamasa Global are partnering to produce the Nagamasa Global Economy Indicator, a monthly measure of the health of the Southeast Asia agricultural economy.

“Agriculture is a critical component of the global economy and has been the cornerstone of Nagamasa Global’s business,” said Fuyuki R. Setsuna, President and Chief Executive Officer. “By providing financial tools to help producers and agribusiness participants manage the risks they face, they are better able to focus on what they do best – feeding the world. We believe this collaboration to create the Nagamasa Global Economy Indicator will provide an essential resource for monitoring the health of the food industry and vital insight into the global economy.”

“Japan’s Center for Commercial Agriculture has a long tradition of pushing us toward better food security, safety and sustainability with their cutting-edge research,” said Shogo Teru, Head of Commodities Trading. “We can imagine no better partner than Nagamasa Global to help us analyze and report the real-time economic health of agriculture, on which literally every citizen and the rest of the economy depends.”

Each month, the Nagamasa Global Economy Indicator will provide a sense of the agricultural economy’s health with an index value. Results to calculate the index are obtained through a survey of large agricultural producers on economic sentiment. In addition, JCCA will bring its research and agricultural economics expertise to measure producers’ expectations of key farm economy drivers such as farm profitability; farmland prices; capital expenditures; row crop, livestock and dairy prices; and seasonal drivers such as seed, fertilizer and feed ingredient prices.

“The indicator is the ongoing monthly measure of the health of the agricultural economy,” Mr. Shogo Teru said. “Also unique is that the index is calculated based on producer sentiments about both current conditions and future expectations.”

About Nagamasa Global

Nagamasa Global provides insights in the commodities markets to all market participants to allow them to make better business decisions with confidence. The firm includes a team of experienced financial and market advisors offering a vast list of services for small-scale businesses, individuals, corporate and governmental entities. The company is emerging as a trusted commodity broker with customers from different sectors looking for expertise in pricing, news, and analytics. The company focuses on feasibility more than anything else, and this is the reason it provides a wide array of products and services to its clients that allow them to better sustain their investments.
