Canada’s flight attendant union says hundreds of flight attendants are being forced work for free every day as they manage hours-long delays on tarmacs due to archaic airline policies and understaffing at Canadian airports.
As air travel ratchets back up to pre-pandemic levels, understaffing at security and customs has led to lengthy delays – regularly two hours or more – at both ends of the boarding and deplaning process. Flight attendants are on-duty during many of these delays, performing critical work-related tasks to ensure passenger safety, and often absorbing passenger frustration and abuse.
However, due to the unfair and outdated way flight attendants work hours are calculated, they are often performing these important work duties unpaid. Typically, flight attendants are only paid for time in the air – meaning they are typically not compensated during delays before takeoff and after landing.
“As flight attendants, we bear the brunt of the anger and frustration and abuse from passengers who are enduring these delays, and to add insult to injury, quite often, we’re working for free while we do it,” said Wesley Lesosky, president of the Airline Division of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
Lesosky noted this is not just a compensation issue either – it’s a health and safety question. Flight attendants have contractual crew rest minimums upon arrival, but those rest periods are being encroached and cut short when their duties are ending later and later due to extensive delays on the ground.
“Two things are obvious here: first, airlines and federal agencies that run our airports need to hire and properly pay their staff so they can keep our airports moving at a reasonable pace,” said Lesosky. “Second, the indefensible practice of not paying flight attendants for hours and hours of their time at work needs to end now. This is not accepted in any other industry. If we aren’t being paid, we fail to understand how we can be made to work.”
CUPE’s Airline Division represents 15,000 flight attendants at nine Canadian airlines.

Hellas Construction and the Tennessee Titans recently partnered on indoor field renovations to the team’s Ascension Saint Thomas Sports Park facility in Nashville, Tenn. Having completed work for 10 NFL teams, Hellas construction was a natural choice for the job.
The Titans have contracted Hellas Construction to remove the existing turf in the team’s indoor practice area that features a 90 yard football field with end zones. Hellas crews installed a new synthetic turf system with Cushdrain® shock pad, Matrix Helix®, and Geo Coolfill® infill.
Cushdrain is an elastic layer paved in place over a laser-graded drainstone foundation that provides planarity and holds its form through multiple life cycles. The Cushdrain® shock pad helps protect athletes from injuries caused by hard impacts with the surface.
Geo Coolfill infill is a 100% organic material that yields up to 40⁰ reduction in field surface temperature, optimal energy restitution and superior foot control.
Matrix Helix has shape memory technology which curls each fiber to secure the infill to prevent migration and ‘splash-out’ for a uniform, aesthetically pleasing playing surface. Hellas RealFill infill provides proper fiber support, energy restitution, enhanced shock absorption and rapid drainage to prevent compaction under heavy-use for consistent G-Max over time.
Hellas Construction President and CEO Reed J. Seaton said, “Nothing is more important to Hellas than providing a quality product and safe playing surface for athletes. The Tennessee Titans needed renovations to their indoor facility and Hellas crews completed the renovation in less than 4 weeks”.
Adam Nuse, Titans VP Business Operations added, “It’s always a pleasure working with Hellas. Their professionalism and attention to detail are unmatched in the industry and exactly what our athletes need so they continue to perform at the highest level.”
Hellas Construction, headquartered in Austin, Texas, is America’s largest sports contractor specializing in the construction and installation of sports surfaces. The firm owns and operates its own heavy construction equipment staffed by specially trained and certified employee crews. Controlling the supply chain and workforce means that Hellas can complete any turf, track, or court project – start to finish- without delay. Innovative medical technologies like the sam® device promote soft tissue healing
Sustained acoustic medicine, or sam®, is a non-invasive ultrasound device from ZetrOZ Systems used to treat soft tissue injuries and arthritis. The U.S. Federal Drug Administration cleared sam® for clinical use in 2013, but many health care providers are just now discovering the many benefits it provides to treatment and recovery efforts.
The sam® pain relief device has helped thousands of patients, including U.S. Veterans and Active Duty Members, regain mobility and reduce pain from common overuse injuries and osteoarthritis. “Sam has been a wonderful medical device to represent in our region since the benefit to patients is tremendous, the product is made in the USA, and the clinical outcomes are clear,” says Mr. Harmon, President of a well-established & long-time distributor for ZetrOZ Systems. “We have no other medical device that can help patients heal faster and reduce the need for surgery and opioids.”
ZetrOZ is driven by innovation, and the sam® pain relief technology is clinically proven to augment the body’s natural ability to heal. “We have been offering sustained acoustic medicine (sam®) since 2016. We have helped countless patients restore function and reduce narcotic and opioid use thanks to sam®. It is truly unique,” says Mr. Harmon.
Healthcare systems like the U.S. Veterans Administration have also adopted sustained acoustic medicine to help patients dealing with soft tissue injury or chronic pain. For veterans of the United States military, as well as senior citizens, having access to the sam® device is a key part of their recovery. A nurse we will refer to as “Lori” in a very busy and influential VA pain management department uses the sam® device in place of opioids whenever possible. “The sam® device is the only thing in pain management that makes me feel like I am doing a great job for my patients,” Lori says. “It makes my patients feel much better.”
The sam® device can be used on any joint — even a patient’s hand — and reduces the risk of long-term NSAID use. “We have almost no issues with any of our patients using the device. We have treated younger patients and patients that are 85 years of age,” Lori says, noting the clinical efficiency of the device for both men and women. For older patients, the technology can seem daunting, so it is important to train patients on how to apply, charge, clean, and reuse the device before they receive treatment.
Lori instructs patients to never apply sustained acoustic medicine to the carotid arteries or their genitalia. Sometimes the area must be shaved for better coupling, but this step is not necessary for most patients. She also recommends applying sam® with a topical diclofenac just beyond the margins of pain. Once the diclofenac dries, the device can be placed over the painful spot. She instructs patients to follow this same process for four hours per day. “Our patients have excellent results on all types of arthritis of the knee and hand,” says Lori. “We also use the device a lot on muscle spasms and back injuries.”
A recent study determined that sam® reduces pain even in patients who have not responded to other types of physical therapy. Lori hopes that future research will focus on the clinical outcomes of using sam®, especially with challenging conditions like chronic regional pain syndrome and neuropathy. While affirmation from this research is important, George Lewis, President and CEO of ZetrOz Systems, as well as the inventor of sam®, notes that the clinical healing and pain relief the device provides to patients is what matters most.

The latest Fleet Advisory Hub™ report shows fleet decision-makers are pausing strategic investments as they grapple with supply chain constraints and economic uncertainty
According to a new report from Escalent, a top human behavior and analytics advisory firm, the uncertainty of today’s business climate has affected the strategic investment decisions of the country’s commercial fleet owners and operators. From electrified and autonomous vehicles to telematics solutions and data analytics technologies, key fleet decision-makers are tempering their eagerness to adopt.
Those are the latest findings from Fleet Advisory Hub™, a leading insights tool designed to explore the needs, expectations and emotions of commercial vehicle and fleet decision-makers. The platform, developed in 2019 by Escalent, offers an annual snapshot of the state of emerging technologies called the Fleet Technology Index (FTI). For each technology, the FTI provides an analytically based sense of market readiness and expectation for adoption, taking into consideration the perceptions of the current business environment and several predictive factors.
The FTI measured the state of adoption for eight key technologies in 2021: data analytics, telematics, battery electric vehicles (BEVs), autonomous vehicles (AVs), artificial intelligence, drones, mobility service and blockchain. Survey respondents showed less eagerness to adopt each of these key technologies, with data analytics, battery electric vehicles and artificial intelligence showing the biggest drops in their year-over-year FTI score.
“Commercial fleets are among the businesses most impacted by the supply chain disruptions we’ve witnessed over the past 18 months,” said Lucas Lowden, insights consultant and program lead of Fleet Advisory Hub at Escalent. “Naturally, fleet owners and operators are evaluating how best to preserve the strength of their businesses today while exploring ways to incorporate new, game-changing technologies that will serve them in the long run.”
Despite the decrease in FTI scores across the board compared with 2020, each technology posted a higher number than in 2019—notably, prior to the pandemic—demonstrating their relative resilience and likelihood of eventual adoption.
“While fleet operators are pumping the brakes on ramping up adoption in the very near term, expectations remain that implementation of these technologies is a matter of when, not if,” added Lowden.
Fleet Advisory Hub is one of the largest collections of commercial vehicle and fleet decision-maker insights available on the market today. Currently, nearly 10,000 fleets collectively numbering over 800,000 vehicles are represented.
About Fleet Advisory Hub™ The results reported come from our 2022 FTI report about the current state of market readiness for adoption of emerging technologies by commercial vehicle and fleet businesses and comprise a subset of commercial and fleet vehicle decision-makers drawn from the Fleet Advisory Hub audience. Participants were recruited from an opt-in online panel of business decision-makers and interviewed online. Escalent will supply the exact wording of any survey question upon request.

A cry for help by a community that has been suffering for centuries. A worthy cause for an uncertain outcome.
“Strangely enough, I would turn to the Almighty, and say, “If you allow me to live just a few years in the second half of the twentieth century, I will be happy.” Now that’s a strange statement to make, because the world is all messed up. The nation is sick. Trouble is in the land. Confusion all around. That’s a strange statement. But I know, somehow, that only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars. And I see God working in this period of the twentieth century in a away that men, in some strange way, are responding — something is happening in our world. The masses of people are rising up” – Martin Luther King Jr.
From the start of the 20th century until 1883 William E. Duboise’s articles like the Freeman; till the emergence of the 21st century’s social media frenzy on various topics in many communities. According to Datareportal Media Research Statistics revealed that as of April 2022 there are over 4.65 billion global internet users. Influencer Marketing Hub 2022 report outlined that there are over 22 thousand YouTube creators that have 1 million or more subscribers. A cry for help from many communities has caused some people in these cities to answer the call; some for monetary gains, and others for a just cause. A man from the city of Atlanta, Georgia known by the name Kevin Roshon Samuels saw a need for a change in the African American status of marriage. He was not a licensed therapist; although he was raised in the traditional church mindset; his verbal approach was a bit rough, and even harsh to many people that listened to his sessions. As of May 2022, this man chose to give a helping hand while his severe past medical history haunted his memories; with a late evening long inhale of air he took his last breath. Many unsatisfied listeners of his sessions smiled with relief; a repeated response from the same types of outcomes from the past.
“All I want to do is help, and if it seems like I’m being too harsh, then too bad. My way seems to be working. We have to save the black community.” – Kevin R. Samuels
Many in the veteran and U.S. Marine Corps community have seen his logo on the John Wick, Heckler, and Koch P30L handgun but still do not know Taran’s face. That’s about to change.
Taran Tactical and several military veteran organizations to attend Paul Ehline Memorial Ride on May 14, 2022, starting at 07:00 am
Taran Butler, founder of Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI) in 2011, is a world champion shooter who started TTI to “share his acquired knowledge of the sport shooting culture.” CQB and self-defense have always been a big part of the lifestyle in the USMC and veteran community.
When Mr. Butler heard about the Sergeant Paul Ehline Memorial Ride and their cause of raising awareness and seeking out solutions for veterans suffering from Agent Orange/burn pit related cancers, etc., he volunteered to share some of his knowledge with the veteran community on May 14 over at Greg’s firing range in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Taran’s products are the culmination of years of trial and error. Each model and gunsmithing technique builds on what worked best and discards what doesn’t. That is exactly the Marine Corps. way of conducting business, so what a great addition Taran will be to this year’s event.
Short History of the Paul Ehline Memorial Ride
First of all, not everyone rides to the event or even rides a motorcycle. The riders are the honor guards of the event, as the original memorial to Sergeant Paul Ehline happened because of help from members of several motorcycle riding chapters across the country.
During the Covid 19 pandemic lockdowns of 2020, Paul Ehline died of service-related cancer. Michael Ehline, Paul’s sole surviving heir and also a U.S. Marine, resolved himself to have a full and proper 21 gun salute for his father.
Since Riverside memorial cemetery refused due to COVID concerns, the Leatherneck’s MC Madd Dog Chapter held a memorial ride in honor of Sergeant Ehline and vets who died of certain cancers all the way to Lytle Creek Firing Line. Like true Marines, the Leathernecks Mad Dog Chapter, The Bullet Chapter, Spartan’s Chapter, and others, including the Marine Riders, adapted and overcame and made sure, with Scottish Bagpipes and bugler Sergeant Paul Ehline received a proper military ceremony.
Afterward, qualified shooters headed to the firing line and put in some past due range time with rifles and pistols. Because it’s vets, range safety is very high, and everyone has a great time. There will be tickets, food, a shooting contest, prizes, and more this year.
Taran tactical will show us some pistol shooting techniques and let us check out some of his latest innovations. The Marine Corps League will be there. Ehline Law will be there if anyone has any legal questions. And there will be highly regarded Marines who ride motorcycles everywhere. They will have their traditional bagpiper and memorial ceremony.
Because of this gesture, Michael Ehline, a personal injury lawyer in Los Angeles, established the Paul Ehline Memorial Ride as a non-profit along with fellow veterans to raise awareness about the development of cancer care, treatments, resources, and therapies for patients.
As we know, Paul Ehline suffered from Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, suffered as a result of his exposure to Agent Orange during his time as a U.S. Marine fighting in Vietnam as an 0848. At the time, the government said these experimental chemicals were perfectly safe and would only kill the jungle canopies around the U.S. firebases.
We know that the official story was not true. We also know that many military bases have poisoned their groundwater with aviation and other chemicals and that burn pits used in combat zones cause health conditions/cancers.
Helping Families With The Dreaded Cancer Diagnosis
The goal of the Paul Ehline Ride is to look out for vets with these health conditions and lobby Congress and Veterans Affairs on behalf of families who gave up their jobs to care for their disabled vets with cancer at home.
Following the Lead of the National Cancer Institute and the United States Government?
Part of helping vets is helping them understand the VA. Recently, the VA, in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, began NAVIGATE (National Cancer Institute and VA Interagency Group to Accelerate Trials Enrollment.) These organizations are helping increase veteran access to novel, cutting-edge clinical trials at 12 sites within VA.
In addition to guiding vets in the right direction with respect to NAVIGATE, Paul Ehline Ride seeks to educate the public about the types of cancers caused by military-related chemical exposure disease. (MRCED)
“Having Taran as an addition to our community is important,” said Michael Ehline, because “It brings in members of the local shooting community to take part in military honors and establish links with like-minded people who care about our warfighters.”
The Paul Ehline Ride is set to take place on May 14, 2022, at Lytle Creek Gun Range. For more information, you can reach Michael Ehline at Ehline Law Firm, a sponsor of this year’s event, scheduled to stage at around 07:00. If you are a patient and unable to attend, we are making efforts to provide a live feed into the Ride as innovations improve as there is no cell communication at the shooting range.
For riders: This is for pre-qualified, moderate to experienced riders. See below to learn more.
About the author: Michael Ehline is a former United States Marine, rifle and pistol expert, and self-defense advocate. Michael remains dedicated to helping with drug development to fight cancer and increase clinical trials accessibility for better cancer treatment outcomes and quality for our military veterans.
