Quality Matters Launches New Quality Assurance Recognition for Course-Sharing

In collaboration with Acadeum, higher education institutions will gain a new marker of quality assurance for online course-sharing initiatives between colleges and universities.

Quality Matters (QM), a non-profit quality assurance organization dedicated to improving quality in online and digital learning, announced new standards today that will recognize quality in course-sharing, focused on ensuring learners can seamlessly advance their academic progress in courses that are well-designed, have a high level of support and are taught by a qualified instructor. The new framework, which was developed by Quality Matters, with expert insights from Acadeum, creator of the largest course-sharing marketplace used by more than 500 institutions of higher education, and representatives from the course sharing community, includes criteria designed to allow QM  to review institutional processes for online course design and delivery at teaching institutions and recognize them for quality. Additionally, QM released guidelines for home institutions, where the learner is enrolled, to ensure students receive appropriately transcripted credit.

The new recognition comes as colleges and universities further seek to help meet learner demands in accessing courses they need at the time they need them. A recent report from Ad Astra found that 57% of students are currently in blocked completion paths, meaning they are missing multiple course requirements needed to complete their degree. By leveraging the consortial model, course-sharing enables learners to count all of their courses towards their GPA, financial aid, and graduation requirements at their home institutions, ensuring that they don’t waste credits or time on their path to a credential of value.

“Online course-sharing has enormous potential to solve many of higher education’s most pressing issues by unlocking existing academic capacity,” said Dr. Deb Adair, Chief Executive Officer of Quality Matters. “Achieving this potential requires assurance for institutions and their learners that these courses are delivered in a high quality manner. We are grateful to Acadeum for their commitment and foresight to champion this need to recognize excellence and ensure transparency”

The standards come following a year-long pilot program to develop and test this framework to ensure course-sharing is leading to a quality learning experience. The work included an advisory committee of experts at home and teaching institutions who have actively participated in course sharing, including many within the Acadeum marketplace.

“Online learning has proven to dramatically expand access to learners in a way that meets their needs and current life situation; but, too often it can be perceived as low quality or not up to par with face-to-face instruction. Today’s technology provides opportunities to pair best-in-class instruction with unprecedented student support,” said Dave Daniels, CEO of Acadeum. “We are incredibly excited to partner with Quality Matters to ensure the implementation of standards to fulfill the promise of online learning of the highest caliber.”

Institutions seeking to enroll students in a partner institution’s course through Acadeum now have the option of searching for courses that align with QM’s quality standards. The guidelines will be applicable and available for use in any course-sharing context. To learn more about the recognition and how your school can earn this designation, please email info@qualitymatters.org.

Brian Kim Announces His Support of Online Educational Initiatives

Brian Kim, by the perception of most, is something of a brainiac. That is also somewhat evident when looking at some of the topics that excite him. Those would include interests such as data science, digital marketing, and of course, his love of art and design.

Brian Kim has a Love of Learning

While, for many people, those may seem like less than exciting topics, for Brian, they are not only his passion, but they have also helped to define his career. The core of all these interests is his hunger for learning. It is his drive to learn that fuels all others, and for Kim, the field of marketing data science, for example, offers a world of learning.

His appetite for education and love of learning has also spilled over into his personal life. Most recently, that overflow was witnessed in Kim’s support of online learning initiatives. This is certainly the best of both worlds. It might not even be a stretch to imagine Brian getting involved in more integral ways in the future with online learning programs.

Brian Kim Moved to Support and Contribute to Online Learning Platforms

One organization, the Khan Academy, in particular, caught the attention of Brian Kim, and in fact, he was moved enough by the program that he became a financial contributor. The Khan Academy is an online-based learning program that creates learning tools (primarily via learning videos) to educate students.

The success of the program has been considerable, with millions of students reported having used the program for college tuition tests like the SAT. Millions of others have also used the Khan Academy tools to help with their educational studies. The program was initially focused on the studies of mathematics and science, but it has since grown to cover a wide array of scholarly topics.

Brian Kim didn’t stop there. He has also recently started giving to other online learning initiatives, including programs related to Planned Parenthood. For those who understand the respect and appreciation that he has for education, this isn’t such a shocking move by Kim at this stage in his career.

The Future of Online Education and Brian Kim

Although it appears that getting involved in the business side of online educational initiatives seems inevitable, there has been no definitive indication from Kim in that capacity. Perhaps it is a matter of time, or maybe he is content with his current career path.

One thing, however, is certain and even more so now, in light of the new social norms as a result of the pandemic, and that is remote learning is here to stay. What capacity that ultimately looks like is yet to be determined, but these new learning platforms aren’t going anywhere soon. That also likely means that these online learning programs will likely continue to see financial support from Brian Kim, if not more.

New Online Training Teaches Business Leaders a Practical and Proven System for Reaching Company Goals Consistently and Profitably

The workshop, Improvement Kata/Coaching Kata Remotely, by the nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute is open for registration.

The nonprofit Lean Enterprise Institute today announced a new online workshop designed to help business leaders dependably and quickly navigate the uncertainties between where a company is now and where they want it to be.

The Improvement Kata/Coaching Kata Remotely workshop, shows leaders how to use “kata,” a term borrowed from Japanese martial arts, to describe a proven and practical method of daily practice to systematically improve business performance.

Kata routines create a company culture based on continuous improvement where people, coached by their managers, rely on scientific thinking to learn how to improve. Utilizing plan, do, check, act (PDCA) cycles to innovate and adapt in an ever-changing environment. Workshop attendees will learn a system for practising kata and then teaching it to their team members.

Training to Gain Competitive Advantage

Workshop benefits include:

  • How to practice Improvement Kata routines to develop scientific thinking in yourself.
  • How to practice and teach Coaching Kata routines to develop scientific thinking in team members.
  • How to expand effective coaching across the company to develop scientific thinking and a culture of adaptiveness and innovation.

LEI developed Improvement Kata/Coaching Kata Remotely for leaders who want clarity about what their management teams should do to gain a competitive advantage in today’s markets through innovation, adaptability, and continuous improvement.

“Improvement Kata/Coaching Kata routines deliver an effective way to practice, learn, and teach people to think more scientifically,” says Beth Carrington, the LEI faculty member leading this workshop. “Developing this skill drives innovation and adaptiveness throughout an organization, enabling people to achieve performance levels they thought were impossible. Get out of an ’implementation mindset’ tools-based approach to lean management and get into an ’adaptive/growth mindset’ focused on learning something new.”

Complete information about tuition, course content, and how to register are available by calling (617) 871-2900, emailing registrar(at)lean(dot)org, or visiting the workshop page at:  https://www.lean.org/Workshops/WorkshopDescription.cfm?WorkshopId=161

Baylor University’s Masters in Computer Science online continues the tradition of training future industry leaders started in 1973. ECS was founded in 1980 but the first computer science professor was hired in 1973 and the first student graduated in 1976. The computer science program achieved national accreditation in 1986, creating a pipeline of developers and engineers in the early years of modern computing.

ECS Dean Dr. Dennis O’Neal marked the 25th anniversary of ECS changing from a department into a school by noting its enduring values. Dr. O’Neal said that every ECS program furthers “our desire to provide our students with a global perspective, be unwavering in our Christian values, and have a positive impact both here and abroad.” Computer science graduates bring these concepts and advanced skills into an ever-changing marketplace.

The effects of Covid-19 on basic skills and education

English and Maths

Nobody can argue that the events of the last 12 months have definitely led to disruption with basic Maths and English, as well as Functional Skills. There is a question mark, however, over whether schools have been able to overcome these obstacles in order to ensure that learners stay on track? These are answers that many parents/guardians are looking for with some feeling that education has been on hold for many learners. Is it enough to be expected to complete Functional Skills online.

It came as no surprise that A Level and GCSE (https://www.learnnow.org.uk/igcse-home-study-distance-learning-courses-online.html) examinations were to be cancelled again in England for the summer 2021 series, however for many students it brought it’s own stress. Although many welcomed the fact that grades would be decided by teachers rather than exams being sat, others felt that this caused them anxiety, as the outcome of these examinations were completely out of their control. Most are resolved to the fact that whatever the outcome, they have done their utmost best and await the results.

Although for some types of employment, you will not use your English or Maths skills, employers still expect individuals to be educated to at least a level 2, before they will even invite them for an interview and applicants are finding that they may be disadvantaged because of this.

Many learners who would normally be looking to continue into full-time employment following completion of their GCSEs, must now consider other options available, such as apprenticeships, where they can continue to complete their Maths and English skills by way of Functional Skills or GCSE subjects. With the outlook of limited employment opportunities available, it is thought that colleges could become overwhelmed with applications from prospective students who would not normally be choosing this route to further their careers.

Pupils taken out of school even for short breaks are less likely to achieve good results in English, maths and science, according to DfE research. This makes for alarming reading; considering the impact Covid-19 has had on education in the past 12 months, particularly within early years settings.

Whilst the situation above may seem rather bleak, we must not forget the resilience of children and how they seem to bounce back in a way that most adults are unable to do so; returning to school after school closures as though they had never been away. We also have the optimism of Teachers who have been desperate to return to a school setting, where they can recommence face to face teaching, which is what they have been trained to do and why they signed up in the first place.

Free Online Workshop Provides Landscaping Tips for Property Fire Prevention

California American Water will host a free online firescape class on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. to educate customers on how to use landscaping to safeguard their residences from the threat of wildfires.

“California American Water is committed to providing its customers resources to help protect their homes.”

“Wildfires are a very real disaster that Californians face year in and year out. Although some years might be better due to rainfall from previous years, wildfires will always be a risk.” said Rich Svindland, California American Water President. “California American Water is committed to providing its customers resources to help protect their homes.”

In 2020, over two million acres of land burned across California due to high temperatures and strong winds, making this a record year for fires. That’s why advance preparation is essential so customers can protect their family, pets and home from these devastating firestorms.

The workshop, presented by Green Media Creation, will provide customers a basic education on how to prepare one’s home for a fire as well as landscape considerations. The class will include hardening one’s home and defensible actions that customers should consider in the landscape such as the kinds of plants, their locations, the conditions they’re in and how they’re irrigated that may be the difference between saving and losing their home during a potential wildfire event. Green Media Creations proudly developed the online class in consultation with the County of Los Angeles Fire Department.

Click here to register. The class is open to 600 participants and is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

ONLINE EDUCATION SUCCESS REVIEW: HUGE RETURN ON INVESTMENT ACHIEVED BY ONLINE BUSINESSES

Return on investment (ROI) is a ratio between the cost of investment and net income. It is a measure of how much investment cost is recouped by profit. A high ROI means that the gains made by an investment compare well to the cost of procuring the investment. ROI is often used as a performance measure. It is a way to evaluate the efficiency of an investment, or it can be used as a method to compare the performance of different investments.

Investments that pull in higher profits have higher return rates. The more profitable a business is, the likelier it will recoup the cost of its investments. There are many ways how profit can be increased. Some may answer that profit margins can be increased, meaning getting more profit with every sale. But the higher profit margins are, the pricier the commodity will be. But as Economics 101 explains, high prices deter demand. Low demand lowers sales and low sales lowers income and ultimately, lowers profit.

So instead, most businesses aim for increasing sales figures. The more items sold, or the more services rendered, the higher the income generated. Having higher income yields higher profits. Higher profits hasten the return of investment.

So the next question is, how to increase sales? For one, businesses can lower prices which may attract demand – that is if businesses are willing to further defer recouping of their investments. However, a better strategy could be to employ marketing.

Marketing is the promotion of a business. It aims to create interest, attract customers, and increase sales. Interestingly, marketing itself is a business investment. Having it adds to the overall cost of business operations. But if marketing is devised and executed well, it will yield returns that will cover all business investments.

When it comes to marketing services, one digital solutions provider is chiefly known for its high ROI offerings and that is Online Education Success.

Online Education Success offers a range of digital marketing services. The variety serves to address the different marketing needs of online businesses today.

An example of its digital marketing services is its Email Marketing Package. Email provides many advantages over other types of digital marketing. For one, it connects directly to its target market. By being able to communicate directly to individual customers, email marketing proves the least costly and most customizable among full marketing strategies.

When it comes to market reach, Online Education Success’s Social Media Advertising Package is hard to beat. By capitalizing on the popularity of social media and its organic networking nature, Social Media Advertising Package allows online businesses to further their reach into the market, increase brand awareness, double website visits, and expand their market share.

When it comes to improving a website’s searchability, Online Education Success’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO) package is a must-have for all website owners. The service applies the best SEO strategies in a very affordable package. The service includes a custom SEO strategy, keyword analysis, link building, On and Off-page SEO treatments. With the SEO package, a website will enjoy first-page search engine ranking in no time at all.

After promoting a business through email and social media, the next step for any business would be to employ a method to finally seal the deal with the customer. This means making the final pitch to persuade the customer to buy the offered goods or services. The most powerful means to do so is with a video sales letter (VSL) and Online Education Success has just the service to help online businesses conceptualize, script-write, and even produce their very own VSL.

The resulting video sales letter can be used in conjunction with other marketing services and increase their persuasiveness. It can be used as content for a social media campaign. It can also be embedded in the marketing email to provide a multi-media reading experience. Last but not least, it can be used as web page content to improve SEO and make a final bid to secure a sale.

All of these methods are aimed at improving sales, increasing revenue, and making businesses more profitable. And when a business is profitable, only then will huge returns on investments are achieved.

Kids Read Now partners with North Dakota schools – In-home reading program delivers books to students

Kids Read Now is excited to partner with New Town Public Schools to mail books directly to their students’ homes over the summer. New Town Public Schools is the first school district in North Dakota to partner with Kids Read Now to eliminate learning loss and close the opportunity gap for their students. The number of students coast-to-coast in the Kids Read Now program continues to grow with almost 400,000 books being mailed to students in 2020 alone!

Most students will experience reading skill loss over a typical summer break from school. Creating home libraries is key to preventing a steep learning slide due to summer break and recent extended school closures.

“Parents strongly recommend the comprehensive in-home reading program that engages families, is proven to eradicate the typical summer slide, and helps kids to gain up to 2.5 months of learning,” said Leib Lurie, CEO of Kids Read Now.

The Kids Read Now K-3 summer reading program mails eight new books to students and includes exciting multicultural, fiction, and nonfiction titles loved by children. Mailing books builds ongoing enthusiasm but does not require in-home technology. Each book includes guided discussion questions to help improve reading skills and increase family engagement. The ninth book of beautifully illustrated creative writing prompts concludes the program so children can write their own stories. Best of all, kids keep their new books!

Kids Read Now is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with the singular mission to eliminate learning loss for all K-3 students.
